Iran Test Launches a Ballistic Missile

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released a statement over the weekend, commenting on Iran launching a test ballistic missile that violates UN security council ban.

In the statement, Secretary Pompeo explains that “the Iranian regime has just test-fired a medium range ballistic missile that is capable of carrying multiple warheads.”

What makes this threatening is that “the missile has a range that allows it to strike parts of Europe and anywhere in the Middle East.”

Pompeo explained that “This test violates UN Security Council resolution 2231 that bans Iran from undertaking “any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”

The resolution was adopted by the UN in 2015, which also endorsed the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. It is known as the controversial Iran nuclear deal. While controversial and heavily criticized, the agreement is supported by many allies of the United States aside from Israel.

Pompeo went on to explain that “As we have been warning for some time, Iran’s missile testing and missile proliferation is growing. We are accumulating risk of escalation in the region if we fail to restore deterrence. We condemn these activities, and call upon Iran to cease immediately all activities related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.”

President Donald Trump has been highly critical of the Iran Nuclear Deal, and earlier this year he made the announcement that the United States would be pulling out of the deal. In addition, the U.S. reinstated all the penalties that had been lifted as part of the deal.

General James N. Mattis, United States’ Secretary of Defense, added that “the threat from Iran is multifaceted.” Mattis explained that “right now the strategic level of threat from Iran is less worldwide than Korea’s, but it is certainly significant regionally and it could grow beyond that if it’s not dealt with.”
