Dems’ House takeover to usher in wave of Trump investigations, indictment and impeachment could follow

This has been their whole mission from day one of Trump’s triumph, our triumph of the people throwing off the noose of the ruling elite, refusing to accept the American “aristocracy.” Trump said in his Inaugural Address that he was going to take the government away from the elites and give it back to the people, and from that very moment, the Democrats have been on an obsessive and insane quest to destroy this man and, by proxy, the American people, free will and the rule of law. This is a showdown for our very survival as a free society and a proud independent nation.

They’re about to get subpoena power – and they plan to use it.

As Democrats officially take back control of the House when the new Congress is seated Thursday, newly empowered House Committee chairmen are preparing to launch a slew of Trump administration investigations.

Those Democrats armed with subpoena power include Rep. Jerry Nadler, the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee; Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., incoming chairman of the House Oversight Committee; and Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., incoming chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

In a press release Wednesday, Cummings said his committee plans to “investigate waste, fraud, and abuse in the Trump Administration,” as well as “other issues that affect the American people every day.”

The looming congressional probes amount to another front in President Trump’s ever-expanding battle with institutions ranging from the mainstream media to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation — all coming as Democrats flirting with a 2020 bid also train their political sights on the administration. Areas of interest probed by these committees could cover everything from Trump’s ousting of Attorney General Jeff Sessions to Trump’s past tax returns as a businessman to Trump’s relationship with adult film star Stormy Daniels.

House Democrats campaigned on using a new majority to push back against the Trump administration. While their most pressing issue will be trying to find a way out of the partial government shutdown that’s been in effect for nearly two weeks, scrutiny of the Trump administration will be next up on the list of priorities.

For his part, the president kicked off the new year expressing optimism, even as he faces the new political reality of divided government.

“2019 will be a fantastic year for those not suffering from Trump derangement syndrome,” the president tweeted Tuesday. “Just calm down and enjoy the ride, great things are happening for our country!”…

“Pelosi parts with DOJ on whether sitting president can be indicted: ‘Open discussion,’” by Brooke Singman, Fox News, January 3, 2019:

White House not expecting to hear from Democrats again on border funding negotiations until Pelosi locks up speakership

Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that a longstanding Justice Department policy protecting sitting presidents from indictment is “not conclusive” and represents an “open discussion,” in a fresh warning to President Trump amid Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe.

In an interview with NBC News’ “Today,” Pelosi was asked repeatedly whether she believed Mueller should “honor and observe” Justice Department guidance that keeps sitting presidents off limits from indictment.

“I do not think that that is conclusive, no I do not,” Pelosi, D-Calif., told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie.

Guthrie asked Pelosi whether it was possible Mueller, in his investigation into Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates during the 2016 presidential election, could recommend indicting Trump.

“Let’s just see what Mueller does. Let’s spend our time on getting results for the American people,” Pelosi said, as she prepares to lead the Democrats upon reclaiming the House majority Thursday afternoon.

Trump’s attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, said in May that Mueller has assured the president’s legal team that he will follow the Justice Department guidance protecting a sitting president from indictment….

“Democrat Plans To File Articles of Impeachment IMMEDIATELY After House Takeover,” by Emily Zanotti, Daily Wire, January 3, 2019:

California Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman wasted no time in introducing articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, filing them as his first order of business in the new, Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.

Sherman, who authored the resolution and has introduced it once before, in 2017, told the Los Angeles Times that he does not believe there is any compelling reason that Congress should waiver or delay in taking action against Trump. To that end, Sherman preempted his own party leadership and filed the resolution calling for Trump to be removed from office.

“There is no reason it shouldn’t be before the Congress,” Sherman told the paper. “Every day, Donald Trump shows that leaving the White House would be good for our country.”

Sherman’s resolution calls for Trump to be impeached for “threatening, and then terminating” former FBI Director James Comey because Comey was “conducting one or more investigations into Russian state interference in the 2016 campaign,” the Daily Mail reported.

He says he may add additional articles later, but wanted to file the first document as a challenge to his Democratic colleagues who have yet to express their support for pursuing impeachment. “Every member of the House will have to address whether there are formal articles of impeachment pending,” he told the LA Times….
