10th and FINAL year for Cold For A Cause is underway this weekend (January 11th – 13th)! Come support your community. You may drop off donations (canned goods, clothing, blankets, etc) to Macon County Farm Bureau, located at 1866 Highlands Rd in Franklin NC. [LINK]

Outlook

Cold Canadian high pressure will continue to ridge down into the Carolinas this weekend as low-pressure tracks from the Southern Plains to North Carolina on Sunday. This low will bring wintry weather to portions of the forecast area this weekend with little or no accumulation in most of Macon County. Drying high pressure will then spread back over the region early next week and keep things dry until next weekend.

Weather Hazards

Rain (mixed at times with snow), sleet, and freezing rain is expected today in Macon County, mainly by the late morning or early afternoon hours. Travel may become briefly hazardous today if ice begins to accumulate on area roads. Up to an inch of sleet may accumulate. The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook that includes Macon County and it is posted below for your convenience.

Hazardous Weather Outlook

National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC
358 PM EST Fri Jan 11 2019

Precipitation is expected to develop across the region on Saturday as a low-pressure system approaches from the west. Temperatures should be cold enough for the precipitation to begin as a wintry mix across the mountains, and could fall as a brief period of sleet or light snow along the I-85 corridor if it begins early enough in the afternoon. Outside of the mountains, the precipitation will most likely change to rain by Saturday evening, but may change to freezing rain north of Interstate 85 early Sunday morning as some colder air tries to filter in from the north. A light accumulation of ice is possible Sunday morning. However, there remains much uncertainty with this system in terms of the degree of cold air near the ground. Further developments will determine if, where, and when an Advisory or Warning might be issued for the wintry precipitation.
