Emotional Support Pit Bull Mauls 5-Year-Old Girl at Airport

The emotional support animal craze has reached peak insanity and will now recede. Those who cannot cope with a plane ride without their pets may sue the airline. But lawsuits cut both ways — as in the recent case of an emotional support pit bull that mauled a 5-year-old girl at the Portland International Airport, prompting a $1.1 million suit against the owner and Alaska Airlines.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Multnomah County by Mirna Gonzalez on behalf of her daughter, Gabriela Gonzalez, claims Michelle Brannan, the dog’s owner, should have known her animal had “vicious propensities” and that Alaska Airlines allowed her to bring a dangerous dog into the gate waiting area without being confined or trained.

The owner gave Gabriela permission to pet the dog. But the dog didn’t give permission. Instead, in chomped down on her face.

“As a result of the incident, Gabriella Gonzalez suffered injury to the muscles, tendons, bones, nerves and soft tissue of her face, eye, eyelid, tear duct and lip, as well as emotional trauma,” the lawsuit reads, noting that Gabriella was left with permanent scarring and “required surgery to repair complex facial lacerations and a damaged tear duct, and has incurred medical expenses and will incur future medical expenses.”

The pit bull didn’t have to be in a crate because Brannan called it an emotional support animal. This was reportedly backed by a generic form letter from her therapist that did not even specify the kind of animal. She might have used it to bring an emotional support rattlesnake on the plane — or an emotional support alligator.

Pandering to the willing victims of neuroses can produce real victims.
