How do you define Japan as wealthy? They have very limited natural resources, their greatest resource is their population. They are screwed, just like they were pre WW2. The only thing keeping them going is financialization of their economy. Without the central bank paradigm they will collapse or go to war again.
It’s likely that by 1999, the point at which returning to real markets and letting them correct to fair value equaled ‘Everybody dies’, so why not kick the can as far down the road as possible?

I know that you guys are the economists and journalists so I am amazed at the lack of short term memory regarding the Big Tech Crash of 2000. No one seems to remember all of the Y2K hype going into 2000 from the 90s. There was to be a computer Apocalypse come 2000 as all computers were supposed to reset. This hype led to a lot of channel stuffing as many bought new hardware so as to be ready for the event. Well the event never happened and just about everyone, including myself had several new computers. So the tech crash was caused by all of the sales being pulled from the future. For the next couple of years few needed to buy any tech hardware or software and all of those Dot Coms lost their venture capital money. The Crash did not come out of nowhere.
