State-Sanctioned Euthanasia for Depressed Teen

If there is a line between legal euthanasia and state-sanction murder, Holland is crossing it:

A 17-year-old Dutch girl was legally allowed to kill herself using euthanasia after she was raped when younger and spent years battling depression, according to a report Tuesday. …

[Noa] Pothoven — who was sexually abused at 11 and raped three years later — said she was sick of suffering “unbearable pain.”

To be alive is to be exposed to pain. People get past even the most horrible suffering, or learn to love life despite it. A 17-year-old has no idea how resilient she is or how happy she could be one day.

Adults, however, have no excuse for not realizing that the future is precious despite pain. This is insane:

In The Netherlands, kids ages 12 to 16 need permission from a parent to be euthanized and must have consulted a doctor, who agrees that their suffering is unbearable and likely to continue.

But at 17, children no longer need their parents’ consent to apply to kill themselves. Pothoven turned 17 in December.

Her mother was surprised when she learned Noa wanted to die:

“We didn’t get it. Noa is sweet, beautiful, smart, social and always cheerful. How is it possible that she wants to die?”

Probably every teenager wants to die at some point. Even those who have experienced serious trauma are likely to change their minds later.

Already we have reached the point of authorities killing children for being depressed. Yet progressives always have to push the envelope further. The most obvious avenue for further progress is in the direction of involuntary euthanasia.
