"Shoeless" Joe Jackson (1888-1951)

Like some of you, I was introduced to Joe Jackson in the movie “Eight men out“.

Joseph Jefferson Jackson was born in South Carolina on July 16, 1888. He broke with the old Philadelphia A’s in 1920.

Overall, Jackson hit .356 with a .423 on base average. He left the game with 1772 hits in 1332 games, or an amazing 1.33 hits per game!

We remember “Shoeless Joe” for the White Sox scandal, or the year that Chicago allegedly threw the Series against Cincinatti. This is from Jackson’s site:

“In 1921, a Chicago jury acquitted Jackson of aiding to fix the 1919 World Series. But Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, first commissioner of baseball, went against the courts’ decision and banned Jackson and seven other Chicago players from baseball for life.”

A sad ending. He could have been one of the greatest hitters of all time!
