How To Create Sacred Space in 7 Steps

If you have ever read a book about Shamanism, magick, Wicca, rituals and anything occult-related, I’m more than sure you have stumbled upon the term “sacred space”. What is it? Why is it required, or at least needed in magic? How to create such space and why is it “sacred” at all? Those and more questions will be answered in this article.

My story

I’ve read over many books about ritual magic and occultism – from Hermetism to Wicca, the term of sacred space appears. At first, I didn’t understand anything at all regarding this term. Then, I didn’t understand what’s so special about it. Finally, I begun to understand the aspects of the term, and the space itself. The problem I faced wasn’t related to my luck of understanding, but to book’ texts – it seems that so far, I haven’t read any book that would explain the idea of sacred space for magical purposes in easy to understand way.

Sacred Space for Dummies

It’s time to fix the problem – what is sacred space? In simple words, it is a place where you perform all your magical rituals – from casting simple love charms, to powerful summoning rites. Such sacred spaces are widely knew, here are few examples so you’ll get a better picture:

• Local Church - a Church in your neighborhood is a sacred space; religious rituals are being performed there.
• Small Shrine – a shrine is a smaller Church, where some religious rituals take place.
• Home Shrine – you can have a small religious shrine in your home, placed on wall.

One thing is similar in all these three places – they are meant for one thing only – rituals. No other activity takes place there. It is because other activities would disrupt energies required for sacred space to work.

The purpose of Sacred Space

Why do we need sacred spaces? Because magick and religion requires specific frequency of psychic energies – famous “vibrations” need to be high enough. The frequency can be increased by performing only spiritual-related activities in the place, from magical work to religious rites. And the higher the frequency is – the better results magical or religious rites give us.

Again, in simple words: the more rites you perform in sacred space, the better the energy there is. The better energy there is in sacred space, the better results rites gives you.

And if you’re interested in psychic development or occult practices, a sacred space can become your place for psychic training, meditation, and magical rites of different kind – your development will be faster, and rituals more effective, meditation deeper.

How To Create Sacred Space in 7 Steps

Now that you know what sacred space is and why you should you use it, you can learn how to create it. First of all, you need to choose the room – it might be an attic or basement, or normal room in your house that is not used at all. Or it can be a house placed deeply in forest, or mountain cabin. The choice is yours, what really matters is that the place need to be quiet and not disturbed by anyone.

1. Clean the room – now you need to clean the room from all items, objects and garbages. Leave no furniture, no artificial lights, nothing at all. The place must be cleaned totally.
2. Cleanse the room – now you need to cleanse the room of negative energies. If you’re an energy worker, you can use energy manipulation skills, and scratch the walls of energies, and throw them away. If you’re not energy worker, use other means I described in the article I linked above.
3. Decorate the Room – for visual people, some fabric on walls can be pleasant. Personally I prefer empty rooms, but the point is for you to feel good in your sacred space – if you believe some decoration elements will give the room a pleasant feel, do it. Just don’t put anything that would disrupt your focus at all!
4. Build an Altar – now you need to build an altar. It can be a box, or a short table, with or without fabric on it. Upon altar, you can place ritual objects, or it can remain empty for further use.
5. Place Candles – the room should be dark; even during daytime it should not be blinded by sunlight in too much degree; but on the other hand, it might be related to school of thoughts, so if you prefer sunlight, you can do everything to put as much sunlight as you want. If you prefer dark room, place few candles. Again, some people prefer black candles, other would like to collect 7 candles of different colours of chakras. Additionally if you like, you can place incenses in the room.
6. Draw the circle - using chalk, paint or even duck tape, draw a circle around the alter, about 3 meters in diameter. It will not only symbolize your connection with universe and understanding of wholeness, but it will also act as basic protection.
7. Ward the room – if you’re an energy worker, you can also ward the room. Remember to recharge the ward from time t0 time.

And now you’re done – you have created your sacred space. Remember – if you cannot find a whole room, a corner of a room will be enough for start. Just keep others away from it, and cleanse its energies more often.

Additional Tips for using Sacred Space

Here are some tips for using your newly created sacred space.

• Perform only peaceful & only occult activities there – do not eat in your sacred space, nor play computer games, nor perform any other than occult related practices. It will keep the right frequencies of energies.
• Do not get angry in your sacred space – if you’re about to get angry, leave the room. You sacred space is your safe refuge, and it should not be disturbed by negative energies of any sort.
• Do not let others into your sacred space - if your sacred space is not meant to be used by group of practitioners, do not allow others to enter it. Keep it private.
• Cleanse it from time to time - perform cleansing of energies from time to time, at least once a month. It will keep energies clean and positive for your work.

And with these tips, you can now use your sacred space for sake of your own development.
