Studying the occult – from general knowledge to focus

A lot of students of the occult I’ve met (including myself) had, or still have, the problem of studying the secret knowledge (that isn’t very secret any more). The problem lies in that weird need to know everything – every single name, date, ritual. That need is leading to two things – first, trying to learn everything results in learning a little. Second, learning everything makes one arrogant.

The two problems

Let me take a closer look on both problems before we move to answer how to deal with them.

Learning everything = learning nothing

The fist problem is simple. A student of the occult tries to learn everything – every occult philosophy and magical system, and every single piece of data in details. But the knowledge we consider as the occult is wide, and it seems to be impossible to learn everything. This way, person trying to do so looses a lot of time, learning pieces of information, and he or she is unable to learn anything from start to finish.

Submitting more time and efforts for this way of studies is ineffective, what the person really do is nothing more than loosing time. You can’t learn anything useful this way.

It makes one arrogant

Another problem with learning everything is related to arrogance. I’ve been there myself, I know people who are there at this very moment. If you’re acquiring so much knowledge, you’re starting to believe you already know everything, or at least more than others. This makes you look at everyone from above, and it’s turning you into very arrogant person. But this approach is deadly and destructive. People perceive you as nothing else than jerk – they don’t really respect you, they find you pathetic.

Becoming focused

In order to fix the problem, what I can suggest is focus on one thing. Or two, three things – but not everything there is to learn. Personally to give you an example, I really like reading about different aspects of the paranormal and the occult, but what I really focus upon are Norse Runes and Energy Work. This way, I can have general knowledge of the occult and understand many things, and at the same time I can focus completely on studying the runes and manipulating psychic energies.

Whatever you will choose to focus upon – no matter if it’s going to be psychic development, tarot cards, high magick, wicca or anything else – it gives you two things. First, you’re becoming an expert in specific field of occult knowledge. Second, you’re becoming aware that you do not know everything, and you’re still learning.  This helps you deal with arrogance.

The beauty of focus

From my own perspectives it’s good to focus, find your “speciality”, your true field of interest. This makes you more original, more unique, and results in need to find others, who focus on different things – cooperate with them, seek their help, and help them too. With this, you can create community, and with community you can achieve more than you could ever do alone.
