Creepy things are happening. Something we may not understand. A lot of bad luck is about. Maybe some strange occurrences are making us suspicious. The smell of sulfur in the air. Is it demons? What is happening? Is this the lake that burns with fire and brimstone come to swallow us whole or spit out something evil instead?

Sulfur is the 16th element on the periodic table of elements. It is one of the most common minerals found in the Earth. Due to it not having a metallic makeup, it gives off a distinct individual odor. Because of this power, it was often used in ancient times, combined with other incense such as myrrh by priests, shamans and alchemists of old to drive away evil.

We now have the knowledge that inhaling such aroma is dangerous to our lungs. In this circumstance, its presence has become feared and in turn demonized by believers of certain Christian based religions. It is said to be the smell of Hell.

Fire and brimstone is a popular saying from the Hebrew bible. It is a representation of the wrath of God. It is inspired by the acridic odor of sulfur given off by lightening strikes, which also eludes to fallen angels, especially Lucifer and their shadow selves. 

“All its land is brimstone and salt, a burning waste, unsown and unproductive and no grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and in His wrath (Deuteronomy 29:23)”

Sulfur is used in magical practices as a powerful aid in transcending realities. It is used to represent the element of fire, the light and still to banish or raise evil. All depending on our intentions, it is a tool, used by Earthen magicians to gather attention and help from the spiritual world. 

Due to it’s stigma, there is much speculation about it. The flame that burns from the powder is blue. Blue is an indicator of calming, heavenly and spiritual energies. It is insoluble in water but, dissolves in carbon disulfide (a popular building block in organic chemistry) and in other non polar organic solvents, such as benzene (present in coal and petroleum and used in chemical synthesis) and toluene (another colorless liquid hydrocarbon).

Elemental sulfur is a bright yellow crystalline solid at room temperature. This is symbolic of the sun in mythological theory. When burned, sulfur melts to a blood red liquid. Hence the combination of oxygen and light, giving it an otherworldly existence.

The transformation of energy is ever changing. It is natural and unnatural all at once. Our beliefs also change with these demonstrations of living charged elements. Which in turn trigger in us our repressed emotions concerning all things similar to these reactions.

What is the smell of hell? It is a quickening of silver, secrets and the darkness changing before our eyes. Our minds and noses are made to identify unpleasant odors as something dangerous to our mortal existence and we may not comprehend this the same as what is toxic to our souls, or what may effect us eternally but, the longer we live, maybe the better chance to figure it out.
