WRONG: ‘Alarming’ Climate Study on Heating Oceans Debunked & Retracted Due to Math Error
Don’t tell Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore, but a claim of the oceans heating up has been rescinded.
A well-known and inflammatory study citing the warming of the planet’s seas at a rapid rate due to global warming has been found to contain “key errors.” Subsequently, researchers have issued a correction.
Doh!
In a report published by Nature on October 31st, Princeton University and UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers stated the big tub of water we call the earth was boiling up 60% faster than previously believed.
Yikes! Call Nancy Pelosi — it’s Armageddon (here)!
Or just call the many Hollywood and left-wing loonies losing their minds over climate change (here).
As it turns out, that’d be a prank call: a mathematical error discovered by independent scientist Nic Lewis reveals the claim was bogus. Lewis posted his analysis to the blog of Judith Curry, a fellow critic of the theory of human-caused global warming.
Lewis explained:
“The findings of the … paper were peer reviewed and published in the world’s premier scientific journal and were given wide coverage in the English-speaking media. Despite this, a quick review of the first page of the paper was sufficient to raise doubts as to the accuracy of its results.”
The error was on the very first page.
The journal has retracted the claim.
As it turns out, the margin of error concerning heating rate is much larger, and the 60% postulation may in fact be as low as 10% (which other studies had already noted).
As for the evolving temperature of the ocean, the research lead in the study has since declared the margin of error “too big now to really weigh in.”
What a rip-off.
In reaction to the original report, the media sounded the alarm.
As a reminder, doomsday announcements were already past the point of goofy.
As collected by The Washington Free Beacon:
A dire warning that we have just 12 years to save the planet from climate change comes three decades after global warming alarmists began saying, “time is running out.”
“The world has just over a decade to get climate change under control,” reported the Washington Post. “The world stands on the brink of failure.”
“Planet has only until 2030,” said CNN. Luckily, The New York Times gave us 10 more years.
This time it’s another “landmark report” from the United Nations predicting “wildfires, drought, food shortage, and severe poverty across the globe.” The only solution, naturally, is more government. The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change advises “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.”
What’s wrong with these people?
A choice absurdity: a buncha kids are suing the American government over global warming (here).
C’mon, folks!
In light of the Nature study’s mistake, Ralph Keeling — a climate scientist for Scripps — took the blame and thanked Lewis for the correction:
“When we were confronted with his insight it became immediately clear there was an issue there. We’re grateful to have it be pointed out quickly so that we could correct it quickly.”
To put it in scientific terms, they really “muffed” it:
“Our error margins are too big now to really weigh in on the precise amount of warming that’s going on in the ocean. We really muffed the error margins.”
