7.0 Mag Quake In Anchorage Alaska

A nearly 7.0 earthquake struck Anchorage Alaska this morning. The quake could be felt as far north as Fairbanks. A Tsunami warning has been issued for Palmer, Kodiak Island, and South shores of the Cook inlet. No injuries have been reported.

I lived in Fairbanks Alaska for ten years, During those years we underwent numerous times without power at -60 zero which is a life threatening event. Freezing rain, fuel spikes up to $6.00 a gallon… The talk of another “Big One” that would stop food from entering the port at Anchorage then the long journey North to Fairbanks was constantly in the back of our heads. A constant reminder in that rugged town was if the trains could not bring food to Fairbanks, all grocery stores would be out of food in less than 7 days. A constant mindset of preparedness is what it took to live in such a harsh environment.

I can confidently say that the majority of Alaskan’s were prepared for this event. The way of life in the Arctic does not allow for much error. The question is, will Seattle, Portland, or any other major city in the Pacific North West be as prepared? Or will you see a “Black Friday” type scenario in the food stores… This is a good learning lesson for those of us who pay attention. Keep your bug out bag and emergency gear on the ready, have a plan, have spare fuel, get a form of communication other than a cell phone ( radio ), KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS!- I want to add, good neighbors are the norm in Alaska, We counted on each other to be as prepared as the family next door.
