Could it Possibly Be True That the Mueller Investigation Was Never Really About Russian Collusion at All?

Jerry Nadler, the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told reporters he plans to shut down the Republican led probes in January.  Although the progress has been slow, the House Committee investigations have already uncovered a great deal of information about the conspiracy to undermine President Trump. Nadler’s order, unfortunate as it is, certainly doesn’t mean the search for the truth is over. Far too much of the story has been revealed for us to turn back now.

The House investigations are but one front in this war. First, President Trump has the authority to declassify documents at any time. He is waiting for the opportune moment to release them. Do Democrats honestly believe a man like Trump would allow them to take him down when he has such a powerful weapon at his disposal? Second, he will soon have a permanent attorney general, hopefully William Barr, who unlike his predecessor will assume leadership of a currently out of control Justice Department. Third, the DOJ Inspector General is currently conducting an investigation. And fourth, the Senate will remain under Republican control.

On Friday, among other developments, a sentencing memorandum was filed in U.S. District Court in New York by the Justice Department for President Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen. The document detailed the charges against him as well as the assistance he had given to the government and did not contain any true surprises. It also struck down Cohen’s request to limit his sentence to time served, calling it “meritless.”

The memo went into extraordinary detail about the seriousness of Cohen’s violation of campaign finance laws which tells us something about how prosecutors plan to nail Trump. The language was so striking that one (very excited) former DOJ attorney, Neal Katyal, appearing on MSNBC’s “The Beat,” said:

The big news tonight is not about Michael Cohen, it’s not about Paul Manafort, it’s about one person, Donald Trump…for the first time you have federal prosecutors essentially saying that Donald Trump committed a felony.

First of all, this is not a document by Mueller, this was filed by Trump’s own Justice Department, by the Southern District prosecutors in New York and there are three pieces to the claim. The first piece is the one you just read which is from page 11 of the filing which says that Cohen made these campaign finance payments at the direction of Trump, and what we’re talking about are payments made for two women for having alleged affairs with Trump and they were going to go public and what happened was Cohen paid those folks and did so in a time when you’re only supposed to give $2700 to a campaign, and that’s for a very important reason. Congress said we don’t want rich people buying elections, we want transparency in our election process so in page 11 the Southern District prosecutors say no, that was done at the direction of Trump.

Then page 12, prosecutors say the agreement’s principal purpose was to suppress this woman’s story so as to prevent the story from influencing the election, so they’re taking away the Trump defense which was in the Edwards case, I was doing it to protect my private life. They’re saying no this was done with the purpose of influencing the election then page 23, a long description by the prosecutors of how serious this violation of the campaign finance laws are, how it strikes a blow to our democracy. There’s some pretty soaring language in there. You put things together. The Southern District federal prosecutors are alleging the president committed a felony. They’re not indicting him. He has any number of defenses available to him, but that’s a document I haven’t seen in my lifetime.

None of the documents included evidence of Trump’s collusion with the Russian government to win the 2016 presidential election. In fact, the investigation has failed to produce any evidence of Russian collusion throughout the 19 months it has endured. Could it possibly be that this was never about Russian collusion at all?
