*This is a transcript from my podcast Be the Light which can be found at my website Be the Light Daily.

Hello everyone and welcome once again to Be the Light. Today we are going to discuss the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, and why he is the right leader for this time period. And, as usual we will do this through the lens of scripture.

Do All Americans Hate Trump?

If all you watch is the mainstream news like ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC, and CNN, you would be led to believe that ALL Americans feel the same way about Trump–they hate him! Right. All Americans obviously don’t hate Trump. 62 million voted for him, and he handily won the electoral college with 304 votes while Hillary Clinton garnered only 232 votes.

So, first let’s consider the word hate. Although we all instinctively know what the word means, the dictionary defines it as: intense dislike, hostility toward, extreme aversion to, ill will toward. Hmmm, in a nutshell, to hate means you feel hostile toward a person and wish him or her ill will. This sounds about right when you consider how the mainstream media, academia, Hollywood, and Democrats feel about Donald Trump. Hatred is a difficult feeling to continually maintain, and it’s not healthy, nor is it Christian. In fact, the Bible tells us, “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.”

Trump Hatred Explained & Refuted

The next question is why do these people hate President Trump? Let’s examine a few reasons. I think perhaps the biggest reason they hate him is because he beat Hillary Clinton who was supposed to carry on the very liberal Obama legacy. Immediately after it became clear that Trump would be our 45th President, many on the left wanted to change the rules of the game.

We live in a democratic republic. What does that mean? Well, it means that yes, everyone gets to vote, but the electoral college decides the Presidency. Each state gets as many electors as they have representatives in Congress. I believe the founders set the system up this way so those vying for the Presidency would have to campaign in small states as well as the populous ones. If we didn’t have the electoral college, candidates would only visit Texas, Florida, California, and New York. Why bother with the other states?

After Mrs. Clinton’s surprising loss, many on the left protested vociferously that she won the popular vote. Indeed she did by 3 million votes, but we don’t elect a President based on the popular vote. And, although Clinton knew this, she did not visit several smaller states. Instead, she set her sites on the larger states with bigger populations. What the Democrats who now want to eliminate the electoral college are doing is akin to a football team not liking the outcome of the game and saying they should have won based on the most yardage rather than the most touchdowns.

So, this first reason for the hatred of our current President is unfounded and childish. It smacks of poor sportsmanship.

Another reason the left seems to hate Trump is because he is not a pushover. Democrats are used to Republicans who know how to lose or do not fight back. Recall all the times the news media, Hollywood, academia, and the Democrats called George W. Bush a liar. They also called him stupid and clownish. They ridiculed him mercilessly on late night talk shows and Saturday Night Live. What was Bush’s response? Crickets. That’s right, folks. He neither did nor said anything about it. In fact, he even asked his cabinet and press secretary not to engage in any defense of his character. He felt to do so would be to tarnish the office of the Presidency.

I can respect why he felt that way, but it was oh so frustrating. In fact, it resulted in his favorability rating, which was quite high after 9-11, to plummet like the Hindenburg. Many on the right wanted a fighter, but what we got in Mitt Romney was another candidate who refused to answer back and defend himself against scurrilous attacks. How many of you remember this? (Mitt audio here) Seems innocuous. Romney actually sounds very fair to women, albeit a little awkward when he used the phrase “binders full of women”. He tasked his people with finding qualified women. He wasn’t satisfied with the original list of candidates for his cabinet, as all were men. Now let’s see how it was handled by various members of the news media (audio here). How ridiculous. But, did Romney fight back and explain the context. No! Once again we, on the right, were saddled with another candidate who refused to fight back.

The left fights dirty. Remember when Harry Reid said this about Romney (Reid audio here)? Romney actually tried to defend himself on this, but to no avail. Then when Reid was ready to retire, he sat down for an interview and was asked about the accusations he had made toward Romney. Here’s how he responded (Liar audio here). Wow! The Senate Majority Leader admitted to lying to achieve his purpose which was to make sure Obama won a second term. The Democrats give new meaning to the phrase “the end justifies the means.” The ninth commandment clearly states, “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” And, Proverbs says this: A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies.

Keeping in mind the Machiavellian ways of the left, the right was thrilled to nominate a real fighter in Donald Trump. And, if you’re a keen observer of Trump, you will notice that he never begins a skirmish. Instead he is a counter puncher. Plain and simple, Trump fights back. It is driving the left crazy, and they hate him for it.

The fact that Trump is not a pushover–the second reason the left hates him–is why the left has been throwing a temper tantrum for over two years now.

If you ask leftists why they hate Trump, they will say he is racist, a homophobe, anti semitic, and anti-feminist. There is absolutely no evidence of that. They claim he is a racist because he wants to protect our southern border with a wall. We will discuss immigration on another podcast, but suffice it to say that those Democrat legislators who currently oppose the wall, used to be all for it. Trump simply wants to perform his most important duty under the Constitution, and that is to provide for the welfare of the country by protecting its borders from invaders and terrorists.

Anti-feminist? He has appointed many women to his cabinet like Kirstjen Nielsen, Homeland Security Secretary; Heather Nauert, US Ambassador to the UN (prior to her Nikki Haley served in this position); Elaine Chao, Secretary of Transportation; Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education; Linda McMahon, Administrator of the Small Business Association; and Gina Haspel, the first woman to lead the CIA, Gina Haspel. This doesn’t sound like someone who is a misogynist or anti-feminist.

Is Trump a homophobe? Trump has called himself a supporter of LGBT rights, and Rick Grenell, who is openly gay, was appointed by Trump to be the US Ambassador to Germany. The Bible does have something to say about homosexuality, but once again, that’s a topic for another show.

And, finally, the accusations that Trump is anti semitic are laughable. His son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is a practicing Jew. His daughter, Ivanka, converted to Judaism and is raising her children as practicing Jews. And, most importantly, the President is a fierce supporter of Israel. He is also the only President who kept his promise to move the US embassy to Jerusalem. Enough said on that topic.

This third reason the left hates Trump just doesn’t hold any water.

Yet another reason the left hates the President is because they say he lies all the time. For example, when Trump says he wants to lower the corporate tax rate from 35% to 15% and instead he settles for 21%, the left calls that a lie. I call that what Trump does: negotiate.

Along those lines, a female reporter a few days ago hostilely questioned the President about what she termed a deception. She asked Trump why he was now calling for a steel wall rather than as a concrete wall which she claimed he had promised his voters. Trump explained that he was compromising on the material based on what the Democrats want, but that didn’t suit the journalist because most of them are part of the resistance. She wanted to catch the President in a gotcha moment.

Here’s another example of a so-called lie the left asserts the President told. Remember when Trump said during the campaign that Mexico would pay for the border wall? The media and Democrats have made much of this alleging that Mexico will not pay for the wall, and thus this is a lie. Since construction of the wall has not begun in earnest yet, it’s hard to see how that is a lie.

In addition, the President never extrapolated the details regarding Mexico paying for the wall. Is it possible, as Trump claims, that after renegotiating NAFTA in the United States’ favor and lowering corporate tax rates, American businesses which had moved manufacturing to Mexico are now coming home, thus creating the revenue for the wall? Once again, practicing what he’s best at, Donald Trump has been implementing “The Art of the Deal” right before our very eyes. Are these items really lies, or are they negotiating tactics?

By contrast, let’s take a look at some real whoppers from Hillary and Obama. Remember when Obama promised, “If you like your doctors, you can keep your doctors. If you like your health insurance, you can keep your health insurance.” He lied with impunity about something affecting all Americans where it hurts the most: their pocketbooks. Listen now to Obama’s architect of the healthcare bill, MIT economist Jonathan Gruber, explaining why they had to lie to the American public. (Gruber audio here) Did you hear what Gruber said. He said the lack of transparency helped them pass Obamacare and called the American people stupid. I don’t know about you, but this lie seems so much worse than equivocating about who’s going to pay for the southern border wall or what it’s going to be made of. Oh, and on top of insulting the American public, he was paid over $400,000 to help write the healthcare law. That’s right folks. That was money out of your pocket to pay for misleading you.

How about the attack on our American embassy in Benghazi, Libya in 2012? Remember when our ambassador, Christopher Stevens and three Navy SEALs were killed because after pleading for help from Washington, no help was provided. Who was in charge of that catastrophe? Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. Afterwards, she and Obama cooked up a fictitious story about some obscure filmmaker named Nakoula Nakoula who had made a Youtube video ridiculing Mohammed and Islam. They postulated that the video outraged the radical Muslim group who killed Stevens and the SEALs. In fact, they even imprisoned the guy over this. This was an outrageously transparent lie to give Clinton and Obama cover.

Calling negotiating tactics lies while condoning the outrageous fabrications which Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton told the American public is beyond scandalous. In Obama’s case, the American people were forced to buy medical insurance which was more costly than previously, they couldn’t keep their original insurance, and in many cases they couldn’t keep their doctors. In Hillary’s case, four brave Americans lost their lives including a sitting ambassador, and an American filmmaker was imprisoned to enhance the lie.

Using Trump’s negotiating style as an excuse to hate the man isn’t logical considering the prevarications most Americans have had to swallow from Obama, Hillary, and Bill over the years. Excuse #3 for hating the President is null and void.

Trump Keeps His Promises

A final reason I believe the left hates Trump is because he is keeping his promises to the people who voted for him. Let’s take a look at Trump’s promises.

First promise:  Trump said he would renegotiate NAFTA, and he did that to the benefit of American workers.

Second promise:  Trump promised to lower taxes.  He kept that promise in 2017 with the House Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, reducing the seven tax brackets to four, and lowering taxes for most.  In addition, in an attempt to increase manufacturing in America and create more jobs, the President lowered taxes on American business from 35% to 21%.

Third promise:  Trump promised to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.  As stated earlier, he did that in 2017.

Fourth promise:  Promising to pull the US out of failed wars, in November of 2016 he said this:  “Hillary and our failed Washington establishment have spent $6 trillion on wars in the Middle East that we never won and that never end.  And now it’s in worse shape than ever before. The Middle East is a catastrophe; it’s far worse off than had we spent nothing. They’ve dragged us into foreign wars that have made us less safe.”  During the Christmas break of 2018, the President gave the military four months to withdraw from Syria. The left, always the peaceniks, now oppose this and side with General Jim “Mad Dog” Mattis.  Why? They just can’t stand the thought of Trump winning anything.

Fifth promise:  Trump promised to build a wall on the southern border to prevent illegal immigration and stop terrorists from entering the current sieve-like border.   Currently, in an attempt to keep his promise, Trump has refused to sign a continuing resolution to keep the government open because it does not provide the five billion dollars he needs for the wall.  So, portions of the government will remain closed until the left is willing to provide that funding. Many Democrats are on record in recent years of supporting a border wall, but not now. Once again, why is that?  The answer is the same. They hate Donald Trump and don’t want him to have a win. Listen here to Democrats Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. All of them sound like President Trump does today (Dems audio).

Sixth promise:  Trump promised to put conservatives on the Supreme Court.  He’s currently two for two with Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. Further, he is filling federal courts with conservative judges as well.  This is great news because conservative judges interpret the law as they are tasked to do by the Constitution. They are not activist judges like the leftists who try to create law from the bench which is the jurisdiction of the legislative branch.

Promises made; promises kept. Five of the six promises the President kept  have been vital issues for conservatives and Christians for at least the last thirty to forty years, yet other Republican presidents couldn’t or wouldn’t get the job done.  Sounds like the right man for this time period to me.

The fourth reason the left hates Trump is because he is Making America Great Again.  We love America; the left hates America. Enough said.

What About People on the Right?

Now, let’s consider why some on the right, including Christians, don’t support the President.

Reason number one is that we have a Republican establishment class that doesn’t see America’s problems like many conservatives do.  In fact, they don’t even see some as problems at all. For example, many wealthy Republicans and Republican legislators don’t want a wall on our southern border, nor do they want immigration reform.  The reason: they like having poor Hispanics work for lower wages. This helps their bottom line. Unfortunately, it hurts our American workers.

Another reason some on the right don’t like the President is because they believe he doesn’t act presidential.  Recently, newly elected Senator from Utah Mitt Romney wrote an entire op-ed criticizing the President on his lack of character.  His bottom line: Trump has not risen to the mantle of the office. The entire op-ed smacks of sour grapes and self-aggrandizement.  In other words, Romney is saying to those reading, “Hey, look at me. You could have had me as President. It’s not too late to make that choice in 2020.”  Well, Senator Romney, we did look at you in 2012, and many of us voted for you because we didn’t want another 4 years of Obama, not because we thought you were a great candidate.  And, if you try to primary this President, you will fail miserably. Let’s listen to Romney speaking about Trump when he thought he had a chance to be Trump’s Secretary of State (Mitt audio here).  Well, well.  He sounds quite positive and complimentary about the President here doesn’t he.  Like I said, Romney’s op-ed smacks of sour grapes.

Along the same lines, some on the right don’t like Trump because he doesn’t fit the mold of what they view as an acceptable country club Republican.  They would be right. Trump is from New York and he isn’t genteel; he’s a fighter. Among those on the country club, neocon side of the ledger with an ax to grind with Trump are Jonah Goldberg, Bill Kristol, Steve Schmidt, and Rick Wilson. Not only do they not much care for his style, let’s remember that these are the same promoters of spreading democracy worldwide that were bullish for George W. Bush.  Unfortunately, the means by which they’ve tried to spread democracy has been militarily and often it’s resulted in everlasting wars, which Donald Trump has promised to find a way to extricate us from.

Inferences

What can we infer from all the hatred and dislike of Trump?  Well, first we have never had a President like Donald Trump. He is not a politician; he’s a businessman and a builder.  He is a straight talker, and he keeps his promises. He works hard, and is patriotic. He’s a fighter, and he gets the job done.  For those who put style over substance, he’s unfit for the presidency. For neocons, he is dangerous. For liberals, he’s a conservative which makes him Hitler.

Can God Use Someone Imperfect Like Donald Trump?

Yes, Trump has his flaws. Everyone would agree with that. But, what human is perfect. None of us are. The big question is, can God use Donald Trump for his divine purpose for America? To answer that, let’s look at three men from the Bible, all with their own foibles, but all used mightily by God.

King David Wasn’t Perfect

Let’s start with King David from whose lineage Jesus came. David was at home when his army went to battle the Ammonites under the leadership of Joab. One late afternoon while up on his rooftop, he saw a beautiful woman bathing, and asked about her. He was told that she was Bathsheba, wife of Uriah the Hittite. Did that stop David from pursuing her? Nope! He was King after all and was never denied what he wanted. So, he sent for her and slept with her. His first mistake was coveting his neighbor’s wife. His second mistake was actually sleeping with her.

It wasn’t long before Bathsheba sent word to David that she was pregnant. David had a decision to make here. He could have acted like a godly man and confess his sin. But instead he tried to cover it up. Sending word to Joab, he asked him to send Uriah to him. When Uriah arrived, David made small talk about the battles and then encouraged him to go home and get a good night’s rest. Of course, David’s plan was for Uriah to make love to his wife thereby covering up David’s part in the pregnancy. Unfortunately for David, Uriah–a man of honor–could not bear the thought of sleeping in his own bed, in the comfort of his home and in the arms of his wife when his men were camping out in the open fields. David tried again the next night even getting Uriah drunk, but still Uriah refused to go home. So, David sent him back to battle, and sent word to Joab to place Uriah at the front of all the troops where he was likely to be killed. In fact, David even asked Joab to pull his troops back and leave Uriah alone to fight. His plan worked and Uriah died in battle.

David’s third mistake, then, was plotting and deceiving his friend Uriah. His fourth mistake was having Uriah killed and enlisting Joab to do the dirty work.

David suffered for his sins in that God promised David his son with Bathsheba would die as a child. Did this end God’s relationship with David? No. In fact, after God forgave David’s sins, he promised to give him another son, Solomon, who would reign in David’s place and build the temple. Finally, in Acts 13:22 God says this: “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.” God used this imperfect King mightily for His divine purpose, a hereditary line leading to the Messiah.

Moses Wasn’t Perfect

How about Moses? You know the story of Moses. He was born an Israelite and his mother put him in a papyrus basket and floated him down the Nile River to escape Pharaoh’s decree to kill all male babies.

Pharaoh’s daughter discovered him and raised him as her own son. He had a pretty good life as a grandson of Pharaoh. But when he became a man, he discovered his lineage and went to see how his people were being treated by Egyptian taskmasters. He saw that they were worked to exhaustion and beaten when they weren’t working fast enough. Moses spotted one Egyptian whipping a Hebrew and Exodus 2:12 tells us, “After looking in all directions to make sure no one was watching, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid the body in the sand.”

Clearly Moses knew what he was about to do was wrong; that’s why he looked around and made sure no one was watching before doing the dirty deed. When he discovered he had, in fact, been seen murdering the Egyptian slave driver, he fled in fear.

Mistake 1: Murder
Mistake 2: Not accepting responsibility and fleeing like a coward.

Did God reject Moses after these sins? No, instead he uses Moses to free the Israelites from Egypt and lead them to the promised land.

Paul Wasn’t Perfect

Let’s consider another Biblical character, Saul of Tarsus (Paul), who began his study of scripture before he was even five years old learning to recite Deuteronomy 6 and memorizing Psalms 113-118. At five years of age he began reading scripture, and by the time he was 13, he was responsible for knowing and living 613 commandments. At the ripe old age of 15, he was training to become a rabbi and was so intelligent he quickly moved past his peers.

As an adult Saul was a Roman citizen and a Pharisee, a sect of Judaism that emphasized “strict interpretation and observance of the Mosaic law in written and oral form.” Saul also felt it his duty to stamp out heresy, which is why he persecuted followers of Jesus Christ. The heresy being that Jesus’ followers (who called themselves The Way) were telling people they were free from the Mosaic Law, that a new covenant with God now existed. People could be saved simply by believing that Jesus Christ was God, he was crucified for each person’s sins and he rose from the dead. Saul felt quite comfortable quashing this new sect by imprisoning Christians or having them put to death. In Acts 22:4 Paul explains his past in his own words: “I persecuted to the death the people who followed this Way. I arrested men and women and threw them into prison.”

In one particularly disturbing act, Saul explains his part in Stephen’s death. In Acts 22:20, he says, “And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.”

Paul’s mistakes were arrogance and pride, persecuting Christians, and being complicit in the killing of some of Jesus’ followers, as in the stoning of Stephen.

Were these despicable acts the sum of Saul’s life? No! On the road to Damascus, Saul was blinded by a light from God while a voice asked him “Why are you persecuting me?” The disembodied voice is revealed to be Jesus.

Saul does a 180, becomes the Apostle Paul, preaches the Good News far and wide, is the author of 13 books of the Bible, and is himself persecuted and later killed.

Everyone Has Frailties!

There are so many on the left who hate President Trump and some on the right who feel the same as well. They act as if everything Trump does is abominable, but let’s see what the Bible has to say about human frailties.

Romans 3:23 tells us, “For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” EVERYONE has sinned. We all have shortcomings. No one is all good or all evil.

Matthew 7:2-5 further explains, “Whatever measure you use in judging others, it will be used to measure how you are judged. And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye, when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then perhaps you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.” The reason the Bible is a great book is because it cuts to the chase. All these people who are critical of our president or who abhor him, need to look at their own sins and among those is the sin of hypocrisy.

Finally, I John 3:15 points out that, “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” For all those who hate Donald Trump, I implore you to take this verse to heart.

An America I Want to Live In

To sum up, Donald Trump is not perfect, but neither are all his detractors.  He is a fallible man who is being used by God to bring us back to an America that we can be proud of.  An America where anyone who wants a job and works hard can make a living. An America in which the rule of law is just and reigns supreme.  An America where everyone pays taxes but is not overtaxed. An America where manufacturing is returning, offering many a chance at a middle class life in this country.   An America where courts are returned to interpreting laws rather than usurping the job of legislators and trying to create laws. An America in which a minority in the media, academia, the Democrat party, and Hollywood can no longer indoctrinate and bully the majority of Americans. An America where someday we might see the end of the senseless deaths of the most innocent among us, the unborn.  This is an America I want to live in. This is the reason many Christians support President Trump despite his human frailties. This is the reason Donald Trump is the right leader for our time.

Let’s Pray for America

Heavenly Father. You are so good to us and so willing to forgive. Thank you for your mercy. Lord, we begin by asking you to change the hearts of people on the left and right who are currently motivated to obstruct our president on everything through the spirit of hatred. Soften their hearts, Oh Lord, that they might see the “planks” in their own eyes and thus moderate their views to a spirit of cooperation and compromise where that is possible. Lord, we also ask that you do a mighty work in our President and in our country. Continue to change his heart and give him your strength that he might be able to endure the countless outrageous attacks aimed at him daily. Continue to bless him, Lord, that he might lead this nation to its destiny, the vision the founders had for America, a bright shining city on a hill. Or as Jesus put it in Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” In His name. Amen.
