Saudi war on Yemen; a strategic failure

Tehran, Brussels Reiterate Support for UN-Brokered Yemen Peace Talks

Senior Iranian and European diplomats exchanged views on the ongoing deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen, and re-pledged their full support for the UN-led process of peace in the war-ravaged country.

The fifth political consultation meeting between Iran and the European Union on regional issues, specially the status of Yemen, was held on Monday in Brussels, where the two sides agreed to continue discussions in this format.

Senior Adviser to Iran’s Foreign Minister in Political Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari led the Iranian delegation in the meeting which was chaired by European External Action Service (EEAS) Secretary General Helga Schmid and attended by diplomats from France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom at the level of Political Directors.

“The discussions focused on the political and humanitarian situation in Yemen,” reported the website of European External Action Service, adding, “All sides reiterated their strong support to a continued UN-led process under the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffith and underlined the importance of the Stockholm Agreement and its swift implementation, in particular in Hodaydah.”

“The participants also updated on the outcome of the Brussels III Conference on ‘Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region’ and on follow-up to the Astana process on Syria,” the report adds, highlighting that “The participants agreed to meet again in this format in the near future.”

Saudi Arabia and its allies, including the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Sudan, launched a brutal war against Yemen in March 2015 in an attempt to reinstall Yemen’s former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

The aggression initially consisted of a bombing campaign but was later coupled with a naval blockade and the deployment of ground forces to Yemen. Around 20,000 people have died since the war began, says Yemen’s Health Ministry.

The Saudi-led war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The United Nations (UN) has said that a record 22.2 million Yemenis are in dire need of food, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger.

Despite Riyadh’s claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

According to several reports, the Saudi-led air campaign against Yemen has driven the impoverished country towards humanitarian disaster, as Saudi Arabia’s deadly campaign prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country.
