During a gathering on Monday to mark the fifth anniversary of Crimea’s return to Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin cracked a joke about Jews and money.

The Tsar’s children Maria, Alexei, Tatiana, Olga and Anastasia are pictued in 1912 at their Livadia summer residence in Crimea. This image was taken on White Flower Day – a regular event for the Anti-Tuberculosis League at the time. They are shown holding staffs of flowers, after walking about the city of Yalta,  receiving donations and handing out flowers in return.

According to the Associated Press, in a meeting with residents of Crimea that included religious leaders, Putin responded to a comment by a local Jewish community member regarding their financial difficulties.

“So, the Jews have problems with finances!” Putin answered laughing. “Such a thing could only happen in Crimea!”

Was Putin’s joke just bad taste, or outright anti-Semitic?  Jews have excelled financially, but their success continues to be one of the main sources of anti-Jewish feeling that portrays Jews as cheapskates, unduly wealthy due to usury and corrupt business practice, and held responsible for manipulating national economies.

There are no real statistics on Jewish wealth, but there is a general assumption that most Jewish people are well-to-do. Historically, Jews did learn to manage money to their ethnic community’s advantage.

Not having a nation of their own until the Jews occupied Palestine. Since the still wandering Jew but now secure in a self-serving fortress known as Israel they have rained down fire and brimstone on the unfortunate peoples of those once beautiful lands on the Mediterranean shores.

In Christian countries, the Jews often became usurers and bankers and often exiled because of the church’s ban on “usury,” a concern to prevent a rich man from overcharging the poor when they were in debt.

So what’s wrong with Putin’s anecdote? Putin’s goal at the gathering was to make the residents of Crimea feel part of Mother Russia. “Russia has taken you into its fold with delight and joy,” Putin flattered the crowd. “We will fulfill all of our goals because we are together now.”

Then Putin used the putdown about Jewish wealth to try and let the locals know that they are all part of the same Russian (not Jewish) family. According to reports, the Crimean crowd laughed along with Putin’s jibe. There are hundreds of cases of the Russian President shooting from the lip; here we include a few.

“Putin’s assessment of Lenin’s role in Russian history during Monday’s meeting with pro-Kremlin activists in the southern city of Stavropol was markedly more negative than in the past. He denounced Lenin and his government for brutally executing Russia’s last tsar along with all his family and servants, killing thousands of priests and placing a time bomb under the Russian state by drawing administrative borders along ethnic lines.”
