Bill Kristol’s Vanity Blog Attacks Kurt Schlichter In the Most Liberal Way Possible

Watching The Bulwark morph from what it says it is (conserving conservatism? really? have you looked at who works there?) into what we’ve all known it was, that is, a toy funded by a far left billionaire and staffed by Vichy Republicans, is not only entertaining but it is happening in a public manner at a much more rapid pace than anyone could have expected.

Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) and Kurt Schlichter (@KurtSchlichter) have had a lot of laughs at the expense of Bill Kristol and his crew. One of the running gags in a festival of mockery was making fun of the Weekly Standard cruise (why anyone would want to be confined to a boat with Bill Kristol and the Weekly Standard staff is beyond me). This is from Kurt’s book launch party back in October. (Full disclosure, I was there, just not in this video.)

When The Bulwark brought on staff a notorious and seemingly misogynistic internet troll called @UrbanAchievr, who came out as a…wait for it…former Bush administration employee the role of  the Weekly Standard in the online vendetta directed against the Washington Examiner’s Selena Zito became obvious even to the willfully blind. Over the past weeks The Bulwark has done f*** all to conserve to conservatism but has willingly served as a vehicle to attack conservatives, even to the point of letting their mask drop completely and sending a possibly deranged leftwing nutter to CPAC to mock pro-lifers and a guy suffering from cancer (see Sometimes It Can Be Hard To Tell Between Strongly Held Principles, Arrogance, And An Old Fashioned Grift).

The criticism from Kelly and, in particular, Schlichter became too much and today they fell back on the left’s go-to trope to attack conservatives: calling them racist.

Today, The Bulwark has a post by the former internet troll titled It’s Time To Stop Talking About a “National Divorce” (sorry I don’t give links to hate sites and to troll farms). It is essentially an snivel that too many people on the right are talking about a break up of the United States. Never mind that getting rid of the Senate, eliminating the Electoral College, banning firearms, regulating speech, reducing religion to a cultural artifact, confiscating private wealth, and packing the Supreme Court in order to regain political power are all mainstream themes of the current Democrat party. Into this group ( his post is grandiosely subtitled: It shouldn’t be difficult for the party of Lincoln to purge itself of civil war agitators) is lumped both Kelly and Victor Davis Hanson. In my opinion, there are worse groups to be a part of. It is also funny how this group of losers which no one wants to associate with is constantly looking for people to purge, kind of reminiscent of those who wanted to purge Trump voters from the party because they saw themselves as latter day William F. Buckley’s ridding the GOP of modern Birchers.

The entire argument is as dishonest as one might imagine. An actual analysis of the issue would be that many on the right are seeing no respect by the left for any of our laws or institutions. The very fact that they are seriously seeking to change the structure of the very government in order to attain power would lead any sane person to believe that we could be on the cusp of dissolving as a nation or even a civil war. The differences between the major parties today are not as great as in 1860, but after one party attempted to execute a coup d’etat against the president it isn’t hard to imagine things getting worse.

But the real slime is directed at the guy they really hate and fear: Kurt Schlichter. Because Kurt knows what they are and isn’t afraid to call them out in public on it and they know he’s right.

What do they use for the evidence that Kurt is influenced by the alt-right? Kurt has written a series of dystopian action/thriller novels chronicling a civil war between an oppressive government collapsing beneath the weight of its own contradictions and a popular insurrection to restore freedom. And they claim that those books are exactly like the Turner Diaries, a book that served as Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh’s inspiration:

In Schlichter’s books, People’s Republic and Indian Country, gun raids are also conducted by black former welfare recipients deputized into a police force whose slogan is “Diversity Is Our Strength.” Before a weapons seizure operation, an agent in one of Schlichter’s books declares “I’m gonna shoot me some redneck, ride their asses back here tied to my hood.”

The Turner Diaries depicts an oppressive government cracking down on “racists, fascists and other anti-social elements.” Posters are displayed “urging citizens to ‘help fight racism’ by reporting suspicious persons to the political police.” In the first chapter of Schlichter’s People’s Republic, a billboard commands “REPORT HATEMONGERS, DENIERS AND SPIES TO YOUR PEOPLE’S BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.”

Insurgents in The Turner Diaries use a truck-borne fertilizer bomb to attack FBI headquarters in Washington. In Schlichter’s Indian Country, insurgents use a truck-borne fertilizer bomb to attack a military installation.

Even the names of the protagonists, Turner and Turnbull, are strikingly similar.

Beyond these obvious parallels, Schlichter’s books and The Turner Diaries share the same paranoia that progressive governments, aided by white collaborators, are empowering blacks to enable them to rape white women and ultimately exterminate the white race.

And on and on.

The shallow juvenile comparison this little fellow makes could actually be made for The Hunger Games with similar accuracy. The novels in question are about the struggle of people, all people, to be free from governmental tyranny. Sorta like that 1775 stuff. That’s it. It is about

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

It is about:

the people can not be all, & always, well informed. the part which is wrong [. . .] will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. if they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. we have had 13. states independant 11. years. there has been one rebellion. that comes to one rebellion in a century & a half for each state. what country before ever existed a century & half without a rebellion? & what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms. the remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. what signify a few lives lost in a century or two? the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.

This Bulwark post isn’t serious, it is spank material for self-described true conservatives who never seem to have the time to worry about what the left is doing but a surfeit if time to tell the rest of us when it is appropriate to wear MAGA hats and what we must believe in order to be true conservatives.

There is nothing remotely “alt-right”–this term actually means nothing more than “I find them icky”–or racially hostile in Kurt’s books. A wild eyed radical racist does not get invited by Hugh Hewitt to host his radio show for a week. He certainly doesn’t command a cavalry squadron and make colonel in the Army.

What this guy, and The Bulwark, are doing is simply slandering people they don’t like, and people who regularly beat them like a rented mule on Twitter, and trying to label them as beyond The Pale. For that to happen, someone a) has to read that website and b) decide that a guy who seemed to make a habit of targeting conservative women on Twitter for boorish harassment is their thought leader. They showed in their vendetta against Selena Zito that they are perfectly willing to lie to accomplish the professional destruction of people who are better than they are. My guess is that it won’t work.
