LISTEN: Analyzing California’s Plan To Cover Health Care For Illegal Immigrants

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has backed the expansion of the state’s Medicaid program — called Medi-Cal — to include coverage for young illegal immigrants. The California legislature agreed and recently passed a proposal to cover illegal immigrants between the ages of 19 and 26. Sally Pipes of the Pacific Research Institute, a free-market think tank based in California, talks to The Heartland Institute about what such a proposal means for the Medi-Cal program and if the state of California can afford to tax their already overtaxed population. One criticism of the expansion is that some of the lower income legal residents of the state who still may not be impoverished enough to qualify for Medi-Cal will be taxed to subsidize people in the country illegally so that they CAN use Medi-Cal resources, a situation Pipes finds unfair and unseemly. As Newsom continues to push back against the Trump administration’s health care policy advances, Pipes says he may end up taking the state of California down a road from which it will take years to recover.
