My Old man was at LOADS of Newk tests back in the 50′s when he was pretty young in Christmas Island and in Maralinga in Australia, Operation Grapple, Grapple 2, Grapple X, Hurrican, Buffalo, Antler, 1, 2, 3, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc
He used to work in the RAF and he worked on the planes (Varsities and Canberras I think) that used to fly through the aftermath collecting air samples, he said that after working on the planes they used to do a decontamination in the showers then come out and they had to stick their hands in a machine (Geiger counter no doubt) and if they registered too high they used to go back in the showers or they would tell them not to eat any food with his bare hands, they just used to wear Khaki shorts and shirts and when they were setting bombs off they used to go to to the other end of the island or sometimes get in boats (bearing in mind it was an Atol) and they told them to look away from the blast and then stick their palms of their hands in to his eye sockets, he told me that he could see the Bones in his hands.
He got Bowel Cancer about 40 years ago but luckily they managed to fix it and he only died about 2 years ago so luckily he got an extra 40 years, loads of the people that were at those tests died ages ago and there ain’t many of them left
