Some of the comments posted online about a recent Co Roscommon (Ireland) eviction of a farming family were ‘an incitement to hatred’ and should be removed by social media companies from their platforms, Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar has said.

Asked about some of the commentaries on the bailiffs and bankers involved in the incident, which included people advocating for them being shot or fed to pigs, Mr. Varadkar said it was unacceptable that the companies would not take down the posts.

“As far as I am concerned, social media posts like that are incitement of hatred and incitement of violence,” he said. “Social media companies don’t seem to think that they are in any way accountable. I know they can’t control the posts that people put up on websites or on social networks but they can take them down.”

The McGann family were evicted from their home in Falsk last Wednesday week. Early last Sunday the property was stormed by a gang, who beat the security guards, burned a number of vans and cars and forced them out of the house.

Speaking to reporters at Government Buildings this week, Prime Minister Varadkar said he had watched a video of the eviction that was circulated on social media and attracted many negative comments.

The Taoiseach said the Government was working on proposals to police social media but needed to identify the “best and most effective way” to do so. He said work was on-going on the mooted creation of a “digital safety commissioner” position.

In the meantime, Gardaí (police) are investigating an arson attack on a KBC bank building in Swords, Co Dublin. This is the second arson attack on a KBC building in less than 48 hours. The latest incident took place at the bank premises on the Main Street at 5.18am.

A Gardaí spokesman said initial investigations found the front window of the building was broken, where the fire was started. No one was injured but the fire has caused extensive damage to inside the building.

Gardaí are also continuing to investigating a fire at the KBC bank building in Dublin’s city centre last Thursday night. The incident occurred at around 11.25pm at the premises on Sandwith Street. Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene and extinguished the fire in the lobby of the building. Gardaí said windows were also damaged and they are investigating “an incident of criminal damage”.

The Belgian-owned bank has been at the centre of controversy over the recent eviction of a farming family in Co Roscommon.

A group of masked men confronted a private security firm on Sunday morning in which three security guards were seriously injured, four vehicles set alight and a dog subsequently put down.

A number of investigations are under way into both the attack and the eviction itself, which was carried out by a group of men believed to be from Northern Ireland.
