WhatsApp: “We Handle 10 Billion Messages Each And Every Day”

Handling a billion messages from people all over the planet is no small feat. In fact, it’s admirable and inspiring to think about. But WhatsApp already did this – last November. Times have changed and for the better. Today, WhatsApp announced via Twitter that a new milestone has been crossed in the form of 10 billion messages each and every day. Breaking it down further, WhatsApp says it works out to roughly 4 billion incoming and 6 billion outgoing messages. That’s a massive amount of LOLs and BRBs.

While we’ve been fans of Kik Messenger over the last few months, WhatsApp has constantly provided a number of meaningful updates that made the app faster, more reliable and better looking. (Old versions looked terrible in our opinion.)

While mere consumers should be overjoyed that WhatsApp, among many others, are becoming a new way to skip out on the ridiculous overpriced SMS plans carriers stick us with, carriers are no doubt feeling the heat. Their once lucrative texting business is being cut out from underneath them. To get around it, carriers are now forcibly bundling unlimited texting plans with other voice and data plans that can’t be opted out of, and then charging more for said bundle. It’s nothing more than a cat and mouse game.

We’re curious. What non-SMS messaging app do you use? Something 3rd party like WhatsApp or Kik Messenger or do you stick to tried and true native solutions like Google Talk, BlackBerry Messenger and iMessage?
