Dolphins DE William Hayes Tears ACL in Knee Trying to Not Put Full Body Weight on Raiders QB Derek Carr

The Dolphins have lost a defensive player for likely the rest of the season, all because of the leagues new insane rules regarding hitting quarterbacks.

The player is DE William Hayes, who tore the ACL in his right knee on Sunday in an odd way.

The defense end hurt his knee after a sack of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr on third-down, but not on the actual sack, but stopping from putting his body weight on Carr so as to not draw a penalty.

“He was trying to not put body weight on the quarterback,” Miami coach Adam Gase said. “His foot got caught in the ground.”

The new rule has been a drawing a lot of fire, as maybe the biggest spokesperson against it is Packers linebacker Clay Matthews Jr., who was again hit with a flag in Sunday’s loss for Green Bay in Washington.

According to new NFL rule changes, a defender “is responsible for avoiding landing on the quarterback when taking him to the ground.” Violating the rule results in a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty.

Gase would not elaborate if stopping his weight is how Hayes tore the knee, but he did go on to say “I’m just telling you what happened. … I’m just telling you what he did.”

It’s only going to get worse the way things are going in the NFL.
