Preview: Giants Look to Keep Up Momentum in Sunday Affair with Buccaneers

The Giants are coming off something rare in 2018 – a win. For just the second time this season, the team got into the victory column on Monday night in a comeback win over the San Francisco 49ers, and now turn their attention to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team that has been like watching a roller coaster in 2018.

Tampa started the season making Ryan Fitzpatrick look like Payton Manning in his prime, even beating the what many consider to be the NFL’s best team, the New Orleans Saints, on opening day.

Now, they sit at 3-6 (this after a 2-0 start), and if you look at most sites the G-Men and Bucs are so even at this point the game is listed as a ‘pick em’ (aka it could go either way).

Here’s a quick look at three keys for the Giants:

1. Protect Eli

The Giants did a nice job on Monday of making sure Eli Manning had a clean pocket to throw from, and he did a good job making sure to find his targets. The Bucs pass rush and outside LB’s will look to put the heat on Manning, and he has to make sure to get rid of the ball quickly, but also the guys up front have to do a good job making sure not to get overwhelmed.

2. Cover Downfield

The Bucs like to get players like Mike Evans involved early, and you can look for QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to look downfield to get him going often against the Giants secondary. The Bucs are not afraid to take shots, and look for them to look to get Evans open on crossing routes as he’s not afraid to go over the middle. This is a game where making sure he doesn’t get free is a key.

3. Limit Mistakes

When the Giants lose, it’s often because they make bad mistakes, like bad penalties, turnovers, and just mental mistakes that cost them big plays, big yards, and usually the game. The Bucs are prone to the same mistakes, so in this case it’s likely the team that makes the least of them that is going to walk out with a win. The Giants have to make sure to be that team on Sunday.

Prediction: Look for the ‘1-0’ Giants (yes, they said they wiped the slate clean after the bye week) to come out with some renewed fire after the win Monday over the 49ers. The Bucs are a team that has been so up and down so you really don’t know what to expect, but in this case the Giants have to be the aggressive force in this battle of two of the lesser NFC teams, and here’s a vote they are.
