Could Philip Rivers be the MVP?

Philip Rivers got some extra press recently as he and his wife are expecting their 9th child. He also made some headlines on the field by setting the consecutive completion record (25) in a single-game to finish 28 of 29 or 96.6%, which is also an NFL record.

A review of the sportsbook from draftkings and you’ll notice that Rivers has helped guide his team to an impressive 9-3 record despite absences this year by Melvin Gordon and Joey Bosa.

The only teams currently positioned higher than the Chargers are the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and the New Orleans Saints. The New England Patriots and Houston Texans have matching 9-3 records. The Patriots were a Super Bowl team while the Rams, Chiefs and Saints also made the playoffs. Houston was 4-12, but they got back J.J. Watt (five games) and DeShaun Watson (7 games).

Statistically Rivers ranks seventh in the league with 3,418 yards, fourth with a 69.7% completion percentage, fifth with 28 touchdown passes and third in the league with a 115.7 passer rating. He is one of five quarterbacks, along with Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Jared Goff and Matt Ryan that have at least 25 passing touchdowns and single-digit interceptions.

In an era with Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, Rivers is often overlooked. Even in his rookie class, he doesn’t have the Super Bowl titles like Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger.

Rivers has played in every game since the 2006 season when he took over for Brees. If he finishes off the season with his streak intact, he’ll tie Peyton Manning for the third longest streak in NFL history behind Eli and Brett Favre. Early next season he could be looking up to just Favre on this list.

Rivers has eclipsed 4,000 yards passing nine of the last ten season, and is well on his way to making it 10 of 11. He has thrown at least 25 touchdown passes 11 straight seasons. Rivers is on pace to finish with his fifth season with a 100+ passer rating as well as set a personal record for completion percentage.

Unfortunately for Rivers, I think there are two candidates that have turned in more impressive campaigns to date. Patrick Mahomes has set the league on fire ranking second in passing yards (3,923), first in touchdown passes (41) with only ten picks and second in passer rating (118.1). I believe Mahomes is the front-runner to win the MVP.

Second, and he may just win the award based on a combination of an excellent season and a remarkable career is Drew Brees. Brees leads the league with a ridiculous 75.5% completion percentage and 123.2 passer rating and third with 30 touchdown passes.

While I don’t think Rivers will walk away as the MVP, he can celebrate another outstanding season along with the new addition to his family. Even more than the individual recognition though, Rivers would certainly prefer a Super Bowl appearance.
