Bolts Strengthen Their D-Line, Bring Back Damion Square on a One-Year Deal

The Chargers are always looking to add depth to a roster that is going to be called upon this season to stop the likes of Pat Mahomes and Derek Carr, and Tuesday they did add a piece with the signing of defensive lineman Damion Square.

Square is a versatile defensive lineman that can add to the teams’ defensive unit, and is aboard with another one-year deal.

If you look at sites like, the Chargers are in most cases second-place in the AFC West, behind the Chiefs who took the Patriots to overtime in the AFC Title game before falling and eventually watching as New England won the Super Bowl over the Los Angeles Rams.

Square, who joined the Chargers in 2014, has played in every game the past two seasons and started 11 in 2018. He’s listed as a defensive tackle, but has contributed as a nose tackle and defensive end, showing again that he is of value because he can play a couple positions on the roster.

The Chargers have done a nice job this offseason adding to their defensive line. They already went out and re-signed Brandon Mebane to a two-year deal.

The one player they still may bring back is Corey Liuget, who was drafted by the Chargers in the first round in 2011, is currently a free agent, but it seems like it would not be a surprise to see the two sides eventually come to a deal before the start of the 2019 campaign.

The Bolts did not bring back Darius Philon, who signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals, a decent player but not a massive loss for the franchise.

The Chargers have also added a big piece on the line, drafting in the first round defensive tackle Jerry Tillery.

He was selected with the 28th overall pick in last month’s NFL draft. The newest Bolt has been nursing a shoulder injury and won’t be available until July at the earliest as the team starts to get ready for the season.

Square has been effective in his time with the Chargers since he came to the team as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 out of the University of Alabama.

Right now Square is listed third on the depth chart in terms of playing nose tackle for the Bolts, and there’s no doubt that with a solid amount of playing time, he can be an even bigger asset to the Chargers for the 2019 season.
