Three Questions About the Bengals as Training Camp Gets Closer

A 4-1 start for the Bengals in 2018 had many fans thinking it was finally the season that the team was ready to make a serious run at the AFC North title.

Instead the team’s week six loss at home to the Steelers started a tailspin that saw the team lose all but two more games the rest of the season.

2019 the team will look a lot different as for the first time in 16 seasons Marvin Lewis will not be the team’s head coach.

Today we take a look at three questions about this team as camp closes in at the end.

1. Can Taylor Change the Bengals Culture?

Things were rolling along in a big way for the Bengals when it seemed their season took a dive when Antonio Brown and Ben Roethlisberger beat the blitz to score in the final seconds to again crush the Bengals dreams.

From there they went south in a hurry, and it was a startling display of once again the team not having the proper leadership to get the job done.

Zac Taylor is expected to install a high-powered offense that will attack, one that should be, if nothing else, fun to watch as the season gets going.

The question is, do they have the players to get it done?

2. The End for Dalton?

In 11 games for the Bengals as starting QB last season, Andy Dalton went 5-6, throwing 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

At 31 years old Dalton will be an unrestricted free agent in 2021, but he’s also due to make a lot more money than the Bengals are prepared to pay next season, meaning this could be it as the team’s starter.

It will be interesting to see if Taylor can not only install a new look to the offense, but also get Dalton to play at an even higher level this season.

3. A Lot of Work to Do on Defense

Last season the Bengals ranked 32 in yards allowed, and 30th in points allowed, two numbers that are were painful to watch as the season went along.

With new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo running the show, the 52-year-old will have to not only have to get last year out of the players mind, but also will have to make sure that this team is ready to go once camp gets going.

He was the Giants defensive backs coach in 2018, and prior to joining the Giants he was defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphins from 2012-17.
