Three Questions About the Lions as Training Camp Gets Closer

After a 3-3 start to the 2018 season the Lions took on the look of a team that many fans have seen over and over.

They had issues making big plays when needed, and the defense gave up critical plays to put the offense behind the 8-ball the rest of the way.

The club wrapping up the season at 6-10 will look for bigger and better in year two under Matt Patrica, and hopefully with a new OC in town the club will be more consistent from the start of camp.

Today we take a look at three questions about this team as camp closes in.

1. What Can Fans Expect from New OC Darrell Bevell?

The Lions knew that they needed a new look on offense which is why they went out and got Darrell Bevell to run the show.

He’s already told anyone who would listen that he wants to run the ball more, and that would be a great thing as this team hasn’t run the ball with much consistency since Barry Sanders was around.

Running would make sense as they have used first-round picks on linemen Taylor Decker and Frank Ragnow. They spent big in free agency on T.J. Lang and Rick Wagner. And last April, they took a running back, Kerryon Johnson, in Round 2 of the draft.

So for the moment, it’s safe to say the Lions should be a lot more balanced in 2019.

2. Make Ford Field a Tougher Place to Play

The Lions didn’t win their first home game until November 18th. Let that sink in, this team was 0-3 at home after losses to the Jets on National TV, the Pats, and then the Seahawks before finally beating the Panthers 20-19.

No one seems to fear coming into the dome, and while at the end of the day it’s up to the team to make it a tough place to play.

The first two home games won’t be easy – as they host the Chargers in week two and then two weeks later host the high-powered Chiefs.

It would be nice to get an early win to set up Ford Field as a place to make other teams not like coming to.

3. Kenny Golladay Becoming a Star

This will be a big season for Lions wide out Kenny Golladay, who last year was the best player on the offense with 70 grabs for 1063 yards and five scores.

He had the ability to make plays and turned into Matt Stafford’s favorite target. No doubt that this year in his third season there will be a lot more eyes on the 25-year-old.

It will be up to new OC Darrell Bevell to find creative ways to get him the ball, and also to spread the ball enough to try and get some other wide outs engaged in games.
