After the Fall: Week 1

You may have noticed I haven’t been around much the last week…

Turns out multiple fractures and dislocations in one’s foot are a very painful, shitty way to experience said foot.

I was checked by a specialist, and I probably won’t need the surgery. The issue is that the arch of my foot could have been, well, destroyed, and I’d end up with more and more complications from that. But the dislocations didn’t extend to that all-important arch starting at the big toe (the breaks are closer to the ankle) and so we’re trying to let it heal on it’s own. Which takes longer than surgery, sadly, but I’ll more likely keep my flexibility that way. As I like to dance, that’s a big deal to me, and so… here we are.

I got a new cast put on, more conventional, but with the ability to be expanded if the swelling gets to be too harsh– so far, so good. There is a reason I don’t work in the physical health field, or even have the slightest interest… I have a squeamish stomach. Just looking at the mess of a foot I had between casts made me very nauseous. It was misshapen and purple, brown, green, and yellow. BLECK! Cat, not having the same issues, was eagerly pouring over the x-rays and cat-scans of my foot and asking questions– I told her to go ahead and signed a waver so they could tell her anything, because I had enough just trying not to vomit. And the pain was high enough to contribute to nausea, as were the pain pills… can’t win for losing! My poor stomach…

I’ve spent most days either sleeping, in a drowsy haze, or struggling with pain and everyday situations like– using a toilet. So much for dignity!! It’s funny how pain erases one’s sense of propriety! I was using a leftover walker from Sharn’s knee surgery days, but it was too exhausting, so Cat bought (which I’m sure I’m helping to pay for) a wheelchair for me, which has made getting around a bit better. Cat has been working from home, but on Tess’s days off, she goes into the office.

In short, I’ve been pretty miserable. As my foot heals, and the pain recedes, I will have plenty of time to sit down to work on writing projects. The day I hurt myself, I had started a rough draft on 2 incidents that occurred in my 20s. I hope to get back to them soon. I think it will likely be another week before I am recovered enough to get back on track.
