BRITAIN’S DEPRAVED PRISON OFFICERS

Britain is in a state of shock following the heart-wrenching story of a student who killed herself in her prison cell was forced to parade naked in front of prison guards. The devastated parents of Katie Allan believe their 21-year-old daughter was targeted for strip searches by mixed ethnicity guards because of her compliant nature and bullied and terrorised by other inmates.

There for the grace of God go your children and mine. The personable sweet-natured youngster struck a 15-year-old schoolboy, who went on to recover, but was later jailed, despite the injured boy’s family begging she be spared a custodial term.

Her mum Linda, 51, has now told the Daily Record that Katie was “strip-searched after almost every visit” and lost 80 per cent of her hair due to stress. She said: “The searches were supposed to be random or intelligence-led but it always seemed to be her.

“Maybe because she was polite and would not complain. She was an easy target. There was an incident when they were training officers and they chose Katie to be strip-searched. She was absolutely distraught after that because she was made to stand naked while they had a conversation.”

The dreadful allegations come months after it emerged Katie was bullied relentlessly by fellow prisoners before her suicide. Katie was handed a 16-month sentence in February after hitting Michael last year and leaving him unconscious. She had consumed four glasses of cider and was identified after a witness took note of her registration number.

Michael’s parents had pleaded with the Sheriff for Katie to be spared jail. Dad Gordon said: “Katie said she deeply regretted what had happened and came across as genuine, sincere and repentant. “Neither Michael, I nor my wife Margaret wanted a custodial sentence for Katie.”

His mum Margaret Keenan has now paid tribute to Katie and said the family were “devastated” to hear she had died. “Katie had written to us again from prison to apologise for a second time and reiterated that she didn’t know she had hit Michael. The whole thing has been a tragedy for her family.”

And her mum says Katie, who would say please and thank you, was threatened with a move to the harsh adult unit of the Falkirk lock-up.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Linda recalled the last time she saw Katie alive. “Katie had been bullied and berated and was in clear distress,” she said. “She had lost her hair. She said she had been treated like a piece of meat.  On my last visit to see her with her brother, we knew something was wrong. She looked exhausted and hadn’t slept because she was being terrorised and bullied.

Linda said: “I said, ‘you’ve got to report this to some of the prison officers, Katie.’ “She said she couldn’t because she was frightened of the officers too. She was told not to worry by the guard, who reassured her she would “sort it out”, but the next day Katie was found dead.

A record number of people killed themselves in prisons in England and Wales in 2016, figures show. The Ministry of Justice said there were 119 suicides, 29 more than the previous year and the highest number since records began in 1978. It also reported a record high of 37,784 self-harm incidents and 25,049 assault incidents.

Prisons in England in Wales are at 98% capacity, with 85,058 inmates, according to the latest figures. The vast majority of inmates – 81,102 – are men.

Frances Crook, chief executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said “The suicide rate in prisons is 10 times that in the community. So prisons are actually killing people. That shouldn’t happen in our prisons. People should at least be safe,” she said.
