1. Get help quick

The same thing should apply to crimes in progress.

Getting caught in a raid in the wrong place at the wrong time is a little too much. Authorities will be arresting everyone in sight, but even if you’re compelled to, it’s best not to run away and just give yourself up. Why? Because resisting arrest will only give police an even more compelling reason to treat you as a prime suspect. If you want to avoid getting charged, it’s best that you do what the authorities tell you to do.

3. Stay silent

The right to remain silent is not just a common trope in police dramas. In the real world, it’s an important principle that citizens will have to apply in situations where the uttering the wrong words could lead you to a decade in prison. If you’re caught in a police operation, it’s always best to not say anything. The fact that “anything you say can and will be used against you” is no joke. After all, you always have your chance to defend yourself in court.

4. Get the right lawyer

Whether it’s a felony or a major crime where the real suspect is still on the lam, you will need a legal expert to help you build your defense. Get a criminal defense attorney who knows state laws and local ordinances. It may seem costly, but you have to realize that your freedom and dignity are at stake here. 

5. Know your rights

If you get arrested and falsely accused of wrongdoing, you still have your rights as a citizen. In particular, you shouldn’t let police search your home without a warrant, which is a clear violation of your privacy.
