% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Nowadays, the internet plays an important and increasing role. It also plays a key role in the travel sector of Europe. As a matter of fact, online content is now a chief source of travel information compared with other forms of traditional media and marketing in the continent. The travel industry connects with customers through different ways. It connects via online marketing, travel apps, search functionality, social media and booking platforms. These multiple sales channels and information sources progressively drive the European tourism sector.

Within the tourism sector of Europe, the exploration of culture is one key motivator for travelers. It accounts for 22 percent of tourism trips made by EU citizens in the year 2011. The reality of this is apparently done through the review that destinations making greater use of the internet in reaching customers have accomplished better compared to their peers in the last few years and they have gained market share from competitors. For example, Spain and Greece have not gained in this industry over the last decade while Italy’s market share gained.

EU Collaborates with China to Increase Number of Visitors

Meanwhile, the European Commission president and Luxembourgish politician, Jean-Claude Juncker, together with Li Keqiang, Chinese Prime Minister, first announced in 2016 the EU-China Tourism Year in 2018. It is a good opportunity to increase investments and visitors on both sides of while Chinese and European citizens get to know each other. As China is the planet’s biggest travel market when it comes to both expenditure and outbound travel, European destinations are building up their strength in this industry, achieving 10.1 million Chinese visitors in the year 2015. This means 13 percent of all outbound travel from China. The EU Travel Commission opened in 2010 its Operations’ Group in Beijing. This leads to large-scale intelligence on the Chinese market. The main priorities of EU are as follows:

  • To show the Chinese visitors what EU has to offer by aiding cooperative marketing campaigns
  • To assist the tourism industry to be “China ready” such as how to better welcome visitors from China
  • To organize B2B (Business to Business) matchmaking meetings for tourism operators at the most significant fairs
  • To facilitate business conclaves

The Commission ran the first international tourism campaign called “Europe, whenever you’re ready” from 2012 to 2014 to urge international visitors to explore Europe. The campaign had a huge impact and garnered a lot of social media coverage. Well-known journalists, travel writers and bloggers contributed and highlighted this initiative. Europe’s diverse natural and cultural heritage was showcased with its various unique opportunities that the continent can provide. In line with this campaign, visa rules were simplified in April 2014.
