Planning a trip to a country that does not have an airport can seem like a hugely daunting task. Navigating a foreign territory, ensuring that you get to your intended accommodation safely and enjoying your trip is the goal. So how do you get to these exclusive countries? Check out our list below.

Andorra

The landlocked country of Andorra is situated between France to its north and Spain to its south. It’s capital city of Andorra la Vella is the highest capital city in Europe, rising to an elevation of 3,356 feet above sea level. The closest airport to this mountainous city is the Girona-Costa Brava Airport in Spain, about 2.5 hours away by car.

Liechtenstein

The fourth smallest European country of Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to its west and south and by Austria to its east and north. To get to the country, you will have to fly in through St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport in Switzerland. This airport is about 30 minutes away by car from Liechtenstein’s capital city of Vaduz.

Monaco

The wealthiest and most expensive place on Earth doesn’t have an airport within its confines due to being surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and France. Nice’s Côte d’Azur International Airport in France is about 30 minutes away by car from Monaco’s largest quarter, Monte Carlo.

Vatican City

The smallest state in the world by both area and population also does not have direct access via air. Being within the vicinity of Rome, however, has its perks, as the beautiful sites of the city are easily reached by road via its surrounding cities within 15 minutes.

San Marino

The only country in the world that has more cars than it has people is surrounded by Italy and Apennine Mountains. The closest airport to get you in to San Marino is The Federico Fellini International Airport in Rimini, Italy, about 30 minutes away by car.
