Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) told Fox News on Thursday that the House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations was preparing to expand its investigation into the Clinton Foundation following new evidence that the charity was engaged in wrongdoing.

Three individuals have come forward to blow the whistle on the inner workings of the foundation, presenting the FBI and the Justice Department with hundreds of pages of evidence showing that the charity was involved in everything from misappropriation of funds to using Hillary Clinton’s status as Secretary of State to elicit donations.

Eyebrows were raised last week when it was reported that Hillary Clinton’s 2016 election loss led to plummeting donations at the Clinton Foundation. According to official filings, the Foundation took in 58% less money in 2017 than the year before. Spokespeople for the charity blamed the declining revenue on an “absence of sponsorship” and the conclusion of the Clinton Global Initiative, but Meadows believes there is something more sinister behind the drop.

“It raises grave concerns their operations were not above board as the American people have been led to believe,” he said. “Whenever we look at the possibility of ‘pay to play’ by government officials, current or former, it demands answers, and anyone who uses public office to sell access for their own financial benefit must be held accountable.”

The Clintons? Held accountable? What world is Mark Meadows living in?

Alas, stranger things have happened (though not many). U.S. Attorney John Huber has been assigned to investigate the Clinton Foundation on behalf of the Justice Department, and The Hill reported this week that his office is working with a PI firm called MDA Analytics that has also been delving into the criminal activity of the charity. Furthermore, as we talked about, The Hill reported that whistleblowers came forward to apply for protected status with the FBI and the IRS last August.

The Hill report said that MDA investigators spoke with Andrew Kessel, the former CFO of the Clinton Foundation in November 2016. At that time, Kessel told them: “One of the biggest problems was [former President Bill] Clinton’s commingling and use of business and donated funds and his personal expenses.”

That may enough to nail the Clinton Foundation on relatively minor charges of misappropriation, but we’re far more interested in gross misconduct than in incompetent management. And for that, we’ll need evidence that the charity was deliberately leveraging donations against Hillary’s status as Secretary of State…not to mention her expected position as President of the United States throughout the 2016 election cycle. If either the U.S. Attorney’s Office or Congress can prove that the Clinton Foundation was indeed a pay-to-play vehicle, those “lock her up” chants may make a roaring comeback.

Perhaps this time, justice will actually be served.

When it was announced that the Clintons were starting a charitable Foundation, I got a strange sick feeling in my gut.
