LOST ARTS OF THE THIRD REICH

If it was not for the hard work of The Ethnic-European’s researchers the Reich Renaissance would have been buried out of sight by the military victors of World War II.  Every cache in the world, especially those of the Soviet archives, has been searched for hidden gems. These include The Art of Adolf Hitler, for the German chancellor’s paintings fetch far more than does the art of modernist painters like Pablo Picasso.

This has nothing to do with the aura that surrounds Adolf Hitler; an art expert says the prices fetched at auctions are based purely on the quality of his artworks.

Political sculptures, including those of German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, were part of the symbolism of the Reich Renaissance.  The chancellor’s images were duplicated in large quantities and were crafted by different authors and in different sizes: small and large table for meetings and official place.

Currently, there are only a small number of documentary photographs of the bust of Hitler factory once situated in Allach. The bust to Catalogue of Photos’ published in 1936 and was republished in 1938/39.

The directory on which the head is seen is typical rather than extraordinary. It is a headshot of three quarters, but the light is placed so that the signature of the sculptor on the neck indistinguishable. The other official photographs from magazines Freude und Arbeit and FM-Zeitschrift 1937 shows the process of working on sculpture workshops in Allach, and finished sculpture with the low base on the shelves, but the head is turned so that the sculptor’s signature also cannot see.

Indeed, in the December issue of Das Schwarze Korps advertisement page of the subscription campaign was printed for 1937, there is a photo of the bust prizes, including the Führer’s head on a wooden stand. Here was seen the head identical to archival photographs of manufacture: low base with chamfered corners, finally see the stamp and all the details. And the details deserve special attention. There is a date placed next to the signature, O. OBERMAIER 34.

Bernhard Bleeker, Bust of Hitler, depicted at the cover of Jugend, 1939. Bleeker was commissioned to create 25 to 28 Hitler busts destined for official NSDAP buildings; one of these busts (1937) is still in the possession of the German Historical Museum, Berlin.

Thirty-six paintings and busts of Hitler were displayed at the Great German Art Exhibitions (GDK) from 1937 to 1944. The first masterpiece that people saw when they entered the exhibition was one of Der Führer in Room 1.

In similar fashion, the official exhibition catalogues all started with a picture of the Schirmherr (patron) Des Haus der Deutschen Kunst (The House of German Art).

Around 450 portraits depicting Hitler and other National Socialist-officials and symbols were plundered by the Americans and are currently stored in the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington.  Keeping this German War Art Collection in the US is not seen by the Americans as a violation of the 1907 Hague Convention and the 1970 UNESCO Treaty on cultural property, as they don’t classify these paintings as art.

This bizarre excuse leads us to the following question: Is a painting of Angela Merkel, Joseph Stalin, Benjamin Netanyahu or General Spoor art or non-art and who decides this? Will those who make such decisions be German left-wing extremists, Russian civilians, Palestinians or Indonesian civilians, or simply war victors and plunderers?

Can people be interested in a portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte, Winston Churchill, Josef Stalin or Adolf Hitler because of its historical significance? Or does their interest mean that they are automatically zealots of these figures?

One thing we learned very well from the tragic 1930s and 1940s is that classifying art as non-art and forbidding books for political reasons is a dead-end street. No matter how much one dislikes Hitler, Napoleon, Caligula or Stalin, and no matter how much their depictions were used as propaganda, a painting or sculpture of them cannot be reclassified as non-art.
