By late 1944, the leadership of the Reich, soon to be overwhelmed by the combined armies of the Soviet, British and American Empires realised that from as early as February 1943 the Soviets established the Trophy Brigades rubber-stamped by both Washington DC and Downing Street.  The purpose of the Trophy Brigades was to join in the ransacking of defeated Germany and share with the Allies the spoils of war.

There has been media interest in ‘Nazi gold, valuables held by the local population and treasures allegedly looted from throughout Nazi-German occupied Europe.’ This has since been proven to be victors’ propaganda:

Art historian Gerard Frederick who researched the vexed matter researched the topic in the art museums and art galleries of all German-occupied territories. In summary, he writes: ‘that their artworks had remained untouched during the German Occupation.’

In fact, not a single public or private collection in German-Occupied Europe was taken by Germany’s occupying forces despite their having enjoyed four years of opportunity to take whatever they wished.

The acclaimed Musée du Louvre, probably the world’s best-known museum and art gallery wrote to the researcher to concede ‘that their artworks had remained untouched during the German Occupation.’

Michael Walsh says, “I have yet to hear a logical reason as to what purpose the hiding of a nation’s treasures would serve except to deny such assets to invaders already known to have agreed on the plunder of the doomed Reich.”

Now, the wartime diary of an SS officer identifies eleven locations of hidden of priceless artworks hidden across Silesia in the last months of the war.  The discovered hand-written diary was penned by SS Standartenführer Egon Ollenhauer, a key figure in events that remain largely unknown in the West.

In 1944 As the Red Army started to bear down on ethnically German territory, Ollenhauer was the link between senior SS officers and the higher command who wanted help to protect their property from the Soviets rapine.

The diary offers detailed lists of each of the eleven treasure caches. One is said to contain 28 tonnes of gold from the Breslau branch of the Reichsbank. Others contain gold coins, medals, jewellery and other valuables deposited by wealthy people in Wroclaw to the local police for safekeeping.  

The diary describes one cache as containing 47 works of art of international importance, including legitimately acquired works by Botticelli, Rubens, Cezanne, Carravagio, Monet, Dürer, Raffael and Rembrandt.  

The hand-written diary has been checked by five institutions in Germany, including the Department of Art History at the University of Göttingen, and these tests show that the diary is real. 

Michael Walsh says, “It is probable that the vast majority of Germany’s looted artworks had been legitimately acquired and displayed in Germany’s art galleries and museums long before Adolf Hitler’s NSDAP was elected in January 1933. How is it possible to loot one’s own assets,” he asks.

The newly revealed diary is in the possession of the foundation Schlesische Brücke (Silesian Bridge), which was set up by a businessman, Darius Franz Dziewiatek, from the Silesian city of Opole. Dziewiatek says that he received the war diary from a 1,100-year-old Christian lodge from Quedlinburger, Germany.

Roman Furmaniak, who represents the foundation, says, “About ten years ago, after many discussions, the Quedlinburger lodge decided to hand the diary to the foundation.

“We are releasing information about the diary now as we wanted to wait until all persons who could be connected to the events and the diary had passed away, particularly officers of the Waffen SS. This was the wish of the Quedlinburger lodge.”

The foundation claims that the authenticity of the diary has been checked by five institutions in Germany, including the Department of Art History at the University of Göttingen, and these tests show that the diary is genuine. 

In October last year, the foundation informed the Polish authorities of what they had. Furmaniak said: “We wanted to release the information to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence and also the 1,100th anniversary of the establishment of the lodge in Quedlinburger.”

The 1,100-year-old Quedlinburger Lodge in Germany, which had been keeping the diary for decades, handed it over to a local businessman in Opole ten years ago.
