Reading a Box of Common Ammunition: Grain, Pressure Marks and +P
A box of common ammunition carries more information than most buyers read: the cartridge name, a bullet weight in grains, a bullet type, and sometimes a pressure mark. Three of those four decide whether the round is safe in a given gun.

The cartridge name, first and last
Match it to the firearm’s own stamp exactly. A revolver marked for bullet 38 special takes that and only that; one marked for the .357 takes both. The brand line matters second — hornady critical defense 38 special is one maker’s .38 Special, and the stamp on the gun does not care whose.
The pressure mark
