Leon Panetta, the US defense secretary, said yesterday that military action against Iran could lead to “unintended consequences” for the region. The U.S. Secretary of Defense warned that Iran could assemble a nuclear bomb in a year or less.

His comments came only hours after Iran itself said that any attack on its nuclear sites would be met with “iron fists.”
