Sunday, the El Comercio newspaper reported that Archaeologists in Peru have discovered a sundial, an underground tunnel and a reception room in a complex dating back to the Wari civilization.

One of the relics is believed to be a precursor to an Incan sundial, while 18 niches painted in white on the walls may have held ancestral mummies, Joseph Ochatoma, leading the excavation, told the newspaper.

Ochatoma added that the reception room is shaped like the letter “D” and is surrounded by platforms.

The discovery was made several months ago but only disclosed recently.

The complex, situated in the the Andean region of Ayacucho was discovered in 1931. The first excavations there began in 1942 but were cut short due to budget shortfalls.

The Wari Ruins are located near Quinua, in the Huanta ProvinceAyacucho RegionPeru at an altitude 2770 m above sea-level. These ruins are all that is left of Wari, the capital city of the Wari (Spanish: Huari).

This capital city covers some 16 square kilometers, and the architecture is aligned to conform to the local topography.[1] This was a highly organized city with residential, administrative, and religious areas. The ruins appear to be in almost the same condition as they were during the days of the powerful Wari (Huari) empire, from about CE 500 to 900. There are signs that most of the buildings were coated with a layer of white plaster, which must have been a stunning sight in those days.

The Wari were a Middle Horizon civilization. This civilization spread out across the south-central Andes and coastal area of modern-day Peru. The Wari came after the Moche and before the Chimu and Inca cultures.

Today, archeologists from the San Cristobal de Huamanga National University are perusing the area for more information about the Wari civilization that dates back to between 600 and 1100 AD, Ochatoma said
