John 8:36 If the Son sets you free you are free indeed!

I’ve touched on this scripture before but believe I am supposed to go back to it today, as in some ways it is the essence of our Christian walk.  In Alcoholics Anonymous, they practice going to God – whoever they conceive Him to be –  and asking Him to remove the desire for alcohol.  In my opinion this simple request marks the beginning of the persons liberation who is enslaved to drink.  In other words they realize that they have no control over their lives because alcohol has affected every area of their lives, making them enslaved to it.  By calling out to Him they admit their helplessness and ask to be delivered, and they are.

With point established, I will now move on to other areas.  A.A. works because our God is merciful and when those who are in bondage cry out, He hears them.  Often, years later, some in A.A. come to realize their God is Jesus!   So what about those of us who are not enslaved to drink but are addicted to pornography?  How about those of us who will not forgive someone who has hurt us deeply and carry the bitterness around like a trophy from year to year?   Some of us lie and do so habitually, but are unable to stop ourselves.   Some men have lusts so deeply embedded that they have lost any attraction to their wives.   Some women who are prone to depression, which I believe has some of its roots in the supernatural, and eat to feel better gaining weight as they do so then  become more depressed and then eat to relieve their depression and thus are caught in a viscous cycle.

My mentor, Wayne Kendall 31 years ago told me that human beings are garbage dumps.  We carry the garbage, the sin around with us for decades, never getting free of the foul stench of it.

Here’s the good news, and it is the miracle of Christianity.  When we ask Him, Jesus, to take control of an area in our life, He will do so.  He has come to set the captives free.  He has come to liberate us from sickness and death.  When we are accept Him as our saviour and admit our nasties - our sin – He cleanses us from those things and makes us new creatures.  When we ask Him, He sets us free as only He can, for He died to have power over the sin in our lives.

In closing todays Bun:  Whatever it is we struggle with, He is greater.  He is mighty to save, wants to do so and is ready and able to free us as only He can.  If the Son sets us free we are free indeed.  If we find ourselves burdened down or caught in the web of sin, all we need do is call out to one whose shed blood cleanses us from all sin.  We proclaim that we are new creatures in Messiah, that old things have passed away.  We proclaim that what we struggle with no longer has hold over us because; greater is He who lives in us then the scum bag – Satan –  who is in the world. (L. A. Marzulli translation.)  We cry out in faith to be set free and He will do it because He loves us.  If the Son sets us free, we are free indeed!
