Happy President’s Day. A day to celebrate some of the wealthiest people to have ever lived and ruled in America. NBC News listed the top 10 richest presidents, and you might be surprised to find out who is number one.

The richest president is worth twice as much as Mitt Romney’s total wealth. He had thousands of acres of the best farmland, and owned plenty of slaves to keep it cultivated. The struggle and frustration of the super-wealthy versus the poor is nothing new in this country.

Being a male landowner was the ticket to freedom. In many ways, it still is.

The richest president, as reported by NBC News:

1. George Washington

Net worth: $525 million
In office: 1789 – 1797
1st president

His Virginia plantation, Mount Vernon, consisted of five separate farms on 8,000 acres of prime farmland, run by more than 300 slaves. His wife, Martha Washington, inherited significant property from her father. Washington made well more than subsequent presidents: his salary was 2 percent of the total U.S. budget in 1789.
