Bob Dylan Sued For Plagiarism Over "Dignity" & More

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Bob Dylan Admits to Plagiarizing his greatest hits

“Well you have to understand that I’m not a melodist. My songs are either based on old Protestant hymns or Carter Family songs. What happens is, I’ll take a song and simply start playing it in my head. That’s the way I meditate.” “I wrote ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ in 10 minutes, just put words to an old spiritual, probably something I learned from Carter Family records. ‘The Times They Are A-Changing’ is probably from an old Scottish folk Song.” “I’ll be playing Bob Nolan’s ‘Tumbling Tumbleweeds,’ for instance, in my head constantly, while I’m driving a car or talking to a person or sitting around or whatever. People will think they are talking to me and I’m talking back, but I’m not. I’m listening to the song in my head. At a certain point, some of the words will change and I’ll start writing a song.”…….Bob Dylan

FOLK LIES: Joni Mitchell Accuses Bob Dylan of Being A Plagiarist

by Jonny Whiteside

“Bob [Dylan] is not authentic at all. He’s a plagiarist, and his name and voice are fake. Everything about Bob is a deception. We are like night and day, he and I.” — Joni Mitchell, Los Angeles Times, April 22, 2010

Just type “Bob Dylan plagiarism” into your friendly search engine, and a plethora of questionable circumstances pop up, enrobing the singer almost as completely as his years of reflexive media fawning have. Documented from his teenage start, when he submitted a hand written, thinly revised version of country star Hank Snow’s “Little Buddy” for publication as an original poem, to his 1963 pilferage of Irish poet Dominic Behan’s “Patriot Game”’s melody for the similarly slanted Dylan tune “With God on Our Side” to songwriter James Damiano’s ongoing multimillion dollar copyright infringement suit (alleging Dylan’s Grammy-nominated “Dignity” is nothing but an altered version of Damiano’s “Steel Guitars”) to the naked “Red Sails in the Sunset” melody heist for the song “Beyond The Horizon” on his Modern Times album, up through the recent Confessions of a Yakuza-Love & Theft plagiarism charges (Love & Theft? Calling Dr. Freud!), the Timrod controversy, even the numerous passages of Proust and Jack London that (re) appear in the text of Dylan’s autobiography, it’s a deep, dark thicket of thoroughly damning and apparently chronic bootlegging. Naturally, Dylan has said nothing publicly about any of these, but he already spent over three million dollars defending himself against one-time affiliate Damiano–the classic delay-to-destroy court room technique.

Few artists can lay claim to the controversy that has surrounded the career of songwriter James Damiano. Thirty two years ago James Damiano began an odyssey that led him into a legal maelstrom with Bob Dylan that, to this day, fascinates the greatest of intellectual minds.

Since auditioning for the legendary CBS Record producer John Hammond, Sr., who influenced the careers of music industry icons Charlie Christian, Billy Holiday, Bob Dylan, Pete Seger, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughan , James has engaged in a half a billion dollar copyright infringement law suit with Bob Dylan.

As the curtain rises on the stage of deceit we learn that CBS / Sony international recording artist, Bob Dylan not only used songs and lyrics written by James Damiano but also solicited Mr. Damiano’s materials for a period of over ten years and eleven months.

As per Judicial filings Bob Dylan’s name is credited to the songs. One of those songs is nominated for a Grammy as the best rock song of the year. Ironically the title of that song is Dignity.

BOB DYLAN FOOLED THE WORLD FOR DECADES

Secularly Bob Dylan is considered by the global intellectual community to be the oracle of conscious intellectualism. He is the most idolized, admired, celebrated, honored and revered celebrity above all other celebrities in the free world.

Dylan is considered the “star of stars”, idolized by the likes of James Taylor, Carly Simon,U2, Bruce Springsteen Paul Simon The Rolling Stones and last but not least the Beatles.

In an interview Sir Paul McCartney states “He was our idol” referring to Bob Dylan”

It must be difficult for Dylan to be in the position he is in. People are always looking to him for the answers. Every word he says and writes is immensely scrutinized for significance by a massive body of adoring fans as if he were a prophet. In some articles written about Dylan he has been described as a prophet

Dylan is well aware the more he downplays these compliments the more mysterious he becomes. Certainly a man of his intellect knows he’s not a profit yet whoever is writing this stuff is certainly creating an enormous profit for Dylan and yet Dylan downplays it all.

Dylan’s defense “it’s just a song” as he pulls the wool over everyone’s eyes. It gets better.

For decades Dylan fooled the world by claiming to have written many of the melodies to his hit songs, when in fact most of the melodies to his hit songs were actually from preexisting songs that he did not write.

These melodies were written by other people. Dylan simply changed the words recorded the song and released it on his album. He then made an enormous profit.

What Bob Dylan did and even admitted to in an April 04, 2004 interview
with Robert Hilburn of the L.A. Times was to simply change the words to existing melodies. He then credited his name to the entire song. For instance Blowin In The Wind”

After being exposed Dylan admitted that he wrote ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ in 10 minutes by simply changing the words to the old spiritual song ‘No More Auction Block”

When one reviews the record label of an original record of “Blowin In The Wind” it simply states B Dylan, which misleads the reviewer into believing that the entire song was written by Bob Dylan..

In 1979 a songwriter named James Damiano began working with people in Dylan’s entourage. In 1982 Damiano auditioned for the legendary music producer John Hammond Sr. who signed Dylan to Columbia Records.

Hammond was also instrumental in obtaining Bruce Springsteen’s recording contract with Columbia Records.

In 1994 Bob Dylan released a song titled “Dignity” that was nominated for a Grammy as the best rock song at the 1996 Grammy Awards. A friend of a man named James Damiano recognized similarities between James Damiano’s song “Steel Guitars” and Bob Dylan’s song Dignity and called Damiano to tell him what he had found.

After identifying the similarities, Damiano consulted with an attorney and explained to him that for the past seven and a half years he was working on writing songs with people in Bob Dylan’s entourage. Further explaining that the relationship is current and ongoing

The attorney was skeptical at first but after a comparison of Damiano’s copyright registrations to Bob Dylan’s newly released album the attorney had no other choice but to believe that Damiano’s claims were true.

He asked Damiano to explain to him how Bob Dylan was able to obtain the songs. Damiano told him these “Bob Dylan associates” who he was working with on songs were like family to him and that he talks to these people as regularly as he would talk to his own family.

After evaluation the attorney suggested to James that he record his phone conversations with all people associated with Dylan that he was working or communicating with.

James then went back to compare Dylan’s previous albums and found blatant similarities on Dylan’s “Oh Mercy” album released in 1989 and also Dylan’s “Under The Red Sky” album released in 1990.

A further comparison of Dylan and Damiano’s work on albums prior to “Oh Mercy” distinctively justified a theft of idea’s filing as early as 1980. In 1995 Damiano filed suit against Dylan in Federal court.

Dylan immediately filed for and was granted a protective order designating all discovery materials confidential including Damiano’s music analysis by a Dr. Greene who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard.

Green stated that Bob Dylan’s song “Dignity” and James Damiano’s Songs “Steel Guitars” bear the “exact melodic arc” of which thirteen out of thirteen notes are in consecutive order. On June 16, 2009 a letter was sent to Bob Dylan’s Attorney Orin Snyder written by James Damiano’s Attorney Robert Church, regarding boxes of James Damiano’s songs produced to bob dylan during discovery.

There were approximately fifteen to twenty-five boxes filled with anywhere from 200 to 400 finished and unfinished songs in each box – thirty seven years of writing – that were never returned.

      Dear Mr. Snyder:

I have one other matter. Mr. Damiano informs me that Steven Kramer (James Damiano’s lead attorney) had several boxes of songs delivered to Parcher & Hayes during the discovery phase of his case against Dylan. Mr. Kramer never made copies of the documents, since I am presuming he felt pressed to comply with an overdue discovery request.

Mr. Damiano informs me that he has never had all the original songs returned to his possession, even though the case is over. If you don’t mind, please explain what you can recall about Mr. Damiano’s song production. Do you still have songs unaccounted for? Can they be returned?

      Sincerely, Robert Church

Mr. Snyder has never replied to Mr. Church’s letter

This story has been covered up by the mainstream media and Dylan has been illegally removing James Damiano’s websites.
