Unicorn Skull Found in Pennsylvania Cave

Pennsylvania has a long history of the unexplained and unusual.  It ranks near the top of the list in Bigfoot and UFO sightings and, with bloody battlefields like Gettysburg and Valley Forge within its borders, it is also a hotbed of paranormal activity.  However, the “Keystone State” just may have a new claim to fame- Land of the Unicorns.

According to the popular alternative-news blog, Journal of the Bizarre, a man hiking near the ancient Indian trails of the Tiadaghton State Forest in Union County explored a small cave and found the skull of an animal with an 8-inch bony projection jutting from its forehead.  The skull was found inside a wooden box with rusted metal hinges.  Interestingly, the parietal bone of the aged skull appears to have been sugically removed, perhaps as part of some Lenape or Iroquois ritual.  A rusted iron blade, along with a few shards of pottery, were also found inside the cave.

The investigative team from Journal of the Bizarre examined the skull, and concluded that it came from an animal closely related to the whitetail deer.

Coincidentally, the find was made earlier this year in a part of Union County known as the White Deer Valley, which has a long history of ghost sightings.  Could it be that the “white deer” of local Native-American folklore were actually unicorns?

The Journal of the Bizarre article about the mysterious skull addresses several historical unicorm sightings in North America by reputable sources such as Dutch physician Dr. Olfert Dapper.  In his 17th century book entitled “Die Unbekante Neue Welt”, Dapper wrote about the unicorns he had seen in the wild near the Canadian border.  Unicorns were also seen in the New World by Friar Marcus, a 16th century explorer was encountered the carcass of a unicorn while exploring the South.

However, the most credible individual who encountered the mythical creature in America was Sir John Hawkins, commander of the British Royal Navy.  Hawkins explored Florida in 1564 and claims to have encountered a tribe of Native Americans whose members wore unicorn horns around their necks.
