Scientists warn on Arctic ‘economic time bomb’
The rapidly melting Arctic is an “economic time bomb” likely to cost the world at least $60 trillion, say researchers who have started to calculate the financial consequences of one of the world’s fastest changing climates.
A record decline in Arctic sea ice has been widely seen as economically beneficial until now, as it opens up more shipping and drilling in a region thought to contain 30 percent of the world’s undiscovered gas and 13 percent of its undiscovered oil.

Arctic summers ice-free ‘by 2013′
Scientists in the US have presented one of the most dramatic forecasts yet for the disappearance of Arctic sea ice.
Their latest modelling studies indicate northern polar waters could be ice-free in summers within just 5-6 years.
Professor Wieslaw Maslowski told an American Geophysical Union meeting that previous projections had underestimated the processes now driving ice loss.
Summer melting this year reduced the ice cover to 4.13 million sq km, the smallest ever extent in modern times.
Remarkably, this stunning low point was not even incorporated into the model runs of Professor Maslowski and his team, which used data sets from 1979 to 2004 to constrain their future projections.

Really, did anyone REALLY think the Earth was always going to be as it was yesterday? They can’t believe these changes are happening, but in the next breath, they will tell you ALL about evolution (which is about constant change). They will tell we need to “save” this or that species or animal but talk about how species are evolving to beneficially adapt to the environment. The Earth’s climate has changed many times over millions of years but we can’t believe the temperature is rising a few degrees. Evolutionary and environmental scientists (many, not all) are the most schizophrenic people on Earth. What will NEVER change is man’s ability to overstate the obvious…..and then panic about the inevitable results.
The universe is in constant change…..get over it.
