Robots To Patrol Cities By 2040: Professor

Robots will be patrolling cities by 2040 according to Professor Noel Sharkey, who predicts their tasks will include asking for ID, tasering and arresting suspects as well as crowd control. In an article entitled 2084: Big robot is watching you, Sharkey, a robotics professor at the University of Sheffield, forecasts a world in which the jobs of surveillance, security and law enforcement have largely been handed over to artificial intelligence. WIthin the next 30 years, Sharkey asserts that, “Humanoid walking robots would be more in use for crowd control at games, strikes and riots. Robots will patrol city centres and trouble spots where fights are likely to break out.”

 

I think despite the dystopian opinion of many on the rise of the machines.  I’d like to tell you about a positive spin on this topic.  Imagine a world where robots do all the work?   You know what that would mean?  Freedom.  Or rather at least it could mean freedom.  True freedom.  Humans would not have to toil in factories all day doing the same thing ove and over again for 12 hours crushing your health and spirit in the process.  You would be free to live life as you see fit.  Be with your family, pursue your personal interests.  I imagine a modern day Renaissance where people pursue the arts and paint of happiness and freedom.  Of course there would be the issue of money and all that jazz but in a world where people are free from the shackles of slavery, there would be no money.

I know im being overly optimistic here and that robots will be used then as they are now, to kill and oppress people like you and me.  That is the reality THEY have made for YOU.  -Mort
