Seven Ways to Protect Yourself from the Police

This is a tough one, because there are a lot of people who support the police, and, let’s face it, not all police are bad. Here’s seven items you should think about.

If you are on a lonely stretch of road and the police car behind you is suspicious, don’t pull over, drive to the police station and pull over, and get on the horn to 911. If the 911 confirms its a cop you can pull over. If not, help is on the way.

Don’t give permission for them to search your car. If there is no reasonable cause, don’t let them. Remember, anything they find can and will be used against you, including the roach your stupid teen age son left in there, or the martial arts weapon your mate takes to class. Simply say, I don’t want my car messed up.

When the police threaten to take you to jail because you won’t let them search your car, go. Chances are, they are bluffing. If they do take you to the station they are going to have to fill out paperwork, and put up with irate citizens who complain about their attitude. And their fellow police officers are not going to like having to put up with a citizen who knows the law, has a complaint, and wants to take down all badge numbers for their lawyer and day in court.

If the police want to come in your house, and they don’t have a warrant, don’t let them. You have a constitution protection against search and seizure. And don’t open the door and come out, speak through a window. If you open the door they can grab you and pull you out. If they bash in your door with a battering ram, or kick it open, get it on film and send it to youtube and your lawyer.

If the police have you for a good ticket, sign the damned thing and go on with your life. If the ticket is bad, record all the details, including the officers badge number. Let him know that you are willing to go to court and discuss it with a judge. Cops don’t really like to go to court and explain things to judges.

Keep a video camera with you and use it. If the cop says you can’t film, he’s lying. Tell him you’re going to sue the hell out of anybody who erases your film.

Above all, educate yourself. It takes almost nothing to find out what the law is and how to use it. And, heck, let’s face it, this article may not be factual in your state, or might be bad advice for your unique situation. So educate yourself.

That’s seven things that protect your life, leaving only one thing left to be said. The police are supposed to be there to help. They are a lifeline. They shouldn’t be abused, but, to let a cop abuse you is to give up your rights, and to let a bully rule.

Support your cops, don’t use this material to abuse them, but protect yourself, and if you run across the bad cop…be prepared to give ‘em hell!
