Portions of an airport in Miami, Florida have been evacuated after depleted uranium was discovered on the site early Thursday.
Miami’s Local 10 News reports that firefighters have cleared an 150-foot area of the Opa-locka Executive Airport in south Florida after an undisclosed amount of exposed, depleted uranium was found.
Opa-locka is a reliever airport which serves as a secondary landing field for aircraft normally going in and out of the larger Miami International Airport.

I’ve never heard of blowing up airplanes at airports, especially not right next to a fence where there is DU in a barrel.

Just my .02 as someone who works in aviation. DU is quite often used as counterweights and balancing of props and rotors. Most likely they found an old abandoned drum of DU weights, forgotten in the era of jet propulsion. This is fark and only news because the general public doesn’t know about DU or its industrial uses. I’ve seen counter weights roughly the size of a foot long sub that weigh around eighty pounds. Dense material such as DU is used because heavier weights can be used with a smaller surface area design resulting in less drag.
