Britain will beg for war at the United Nations

British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has announced that today that he will present a resolution before the Security Council of the United Nations to condemn the attack with chemical weapons “from Assad” and authorize “measures necessary ‘to protect’ Syrian civilians. “

“We always said that we wanted the Security Council of the UN to live up to its responsibilities. Today we have the opportunity to do so,” Cameron said through his twitter account. “The UK has prepared a draft resolution condemning the attack with chemical weapons by Assad and authorize the necessary measures to protect civilians.”

This resolution “authorized all necessary measures under Chapter VII of the UN Charter,” the draft says. Chapter VII is devoted to “all actions that pose a threat to the peace, breach of the peace and acts of aggression”.

Russia and China, two countries that oppose any intervention against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, have the right of veto in the Security Council, which is why it will be impossible for such resolution to be approved. However, many countries have asked that any plan to attack Syria should first pass through the Council, where the U.S., France and the UK are permanent members.

The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon, said today in The Hague that although the images of the attack to Damascus “are unlike anything we’ve seen in the XXI century”, he is requesting time for UN inspectors in the field to investigate.

Precisely this morning the UN team of inspectors have resumed their mission, after it was postponed by the Assad regime because of the sniper attack on the very same UN team. The Syrian government cited lack of security guarantees by the forces opposed to President Bashar al-Assad; the terrorists who in reality pulled off the attack.

According to Syrian opposition sources quoted by France Presse, the inspection team has reached the suburb of Ghuta first thing after leaving the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus in a convoy of six vehicles similar to that used on the first visit. That day, the convoy was attacked by a sniper and had to postpone the visit. At one in the afternoon today, NATO planned to hold its first meeting after the holiday break, where members will discuss the role of the alliance in responding to the situation in Syria.

The inspections have resumed even when much of the international community, with the United States in the lead, has claimed that the chemical weapons used around Damascus belong to the Assad regime.

On Tuesday, Washington made clear that it believes that the Syrian government is responsible for hundreds of deaths caused by the attack on several suburbs of Damascus last week and the response will be an imminent military intervention. “There must be an answer,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney. “We are ready to act instantly,” said Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.

Turkey said Tuesday the country is willing to be part of a military coalition even without Security Council backing. The government led by Erdagon is the newest NATO member and wants to show it isn’t there for fun. Turkey has been key in the invasion of Libya and Syria, by allowing terrorists and war equipment to be shipped from its territory to the two Arab nations.

Syrian supporters such as China and Russia have warned of the consequences of a possible attack. The most striking was the Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, who said that the region is “a powder keg” and that U.S. intervention would be “disastrous”. Haqiqatpur Mansur, a prominent member of the Iranian parliament, told Fars news agency that “if the U.S. attacks Syria, the flames of the wrath of the revolutionaries in the region would point to the Zionist regime” of Israel.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that military action would only serve to destabilize the region and insisted on a negotiated solution to the civil war in Syria. The tension in Syria has already caused instability in the stock markets. The price of Brent crude oil reached $ 117 for the first time since February and the stock markets opened lower, especially in the Gulf states. The markets in Qatar and the UAE have started the session dropping more than 3%.

The proof is a phone call?

The Obama administration says it could present evidence on Thursday of the involvement of the regime of Bashar al-Assad in the chemical weapons attack last week near Damascus, reported the Washington Post.

The supposed proof of the crime is what the US claims is an intercepted call on the day of the attack, according to Foreign Policy magazine. In its blog, The Cable, the publication said that in the hours following the alleged attack last Wednesday an official from the Syrian Defense Ministry made a call regarding the actions of a chemical warfare unit, asking for explanations for the attack with a nerve agent.

That conversation, according to the magazine, was intercepted by the U.S. intelligence services, hence the Obama Administration asserts that it is sure that the bombing was the work of Al Assad’s regime. However, Foreign Policy says that the intercepted call raises questions about whether the slaughter occurred on August 21 was the work of a Syrian officer, the US backed terrorists, who received chemical weapons from its handlers or the Assad regime itself. “It is not clear who was in control,” said a senior intelligence to The Cable.

NATO meets to talk war

While the American military has already decided to hit Syria, the ambassadors of the 28 NATO countries meet Wednesday in Brussels with the secretary general of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, to “exchange information, assessments and positions of the allies” on the Syrian crisis within the framework of the meeting of the North Atlantic Council, the highest decision-making body of Euro-Atlantic defense.

The appointment comes at a time of great uproar as reports point to an imminent attack with cruise missiles by the United States against Syria in response to the latest attack with chemical weapons on the outskirts of Damascus last Wednesday. The secretary general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon today called for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Syria, instead of the military one and requested time for UN inspectors to study the alleged use of chemical weapons.

“Give peace a chance, give diplomacy a chance,” Ban said in The Hague, where he is to celebrate the centenary of the opening of the Peace Palace. The South Korean diplomat argued that military intervention is not the solution in Syria, adding that “the military logic has given us a country on the brink of total destruction so we must explore all avenues for negotiation. Why add fuel to the fire,” Ban said in his call for a diplomatic solution in Syria.
