NFL disarms off-duty police officers, bans law enforcement from carrying guns inside stadiums
Off-duty law enforcement will no longer be able to carry their weapons into an NFL stadium after a new policy has come into play.
“Gun-free zones” have been spreading like wildfire, and after a new policy implemented by the NFL that bans all off-duty police officers from carrying their weapons inside NFL stadiums, yet another “zone” has been established.
According to Fox affiliate WJW, Cleveland, Ohio Police said they received a memo from the NFL on September 11 explaining that state and local law enforcement were prohibited from carrying inside the stadiums, as well as federal agencies, TheBlaze reported.
A spokesman of the NFL explained that, apparently, having zero armed off-duty police officers in the stadiums will enhance the gameday experience, Cleveland.com reported.
President of the Cleveland Police Patrolman’s Association, Jeff Follmer, says police officers are never truly off-duty, and have a right to carry their sidearm at all times.
“A police officer is never happy to give up his service weapon, especially when we have the right to carry it, you know, 24-hours, 7-days a week and we’re upheld by our oath too, to protect and serve the public on or off-duty,” Follmer said.
“We are police officers 24/7,” he added. “I don’t know why anyone would want to disarm a police officer.”
While the NFL has the right to create their own by-laws for the organization, thereby disarming cops, law enforcement also has the right not to purchase tickets.
