California City Bans Smoking At Home

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that the city council of San Rafael, California has passed an ordinance prohibiting smoking inside residences with shared walls. This would include, of course, apartments, condominiums, duplexes, and other multi-family dwellings.

The ordinance was passed in October 2012, but did not go into effect until November 14, 2013.

According to a statement made by the city council on the city’s official website, the new regulation strengthens “the City’s municipal code to further protect the community from secondhand smoke.”

This is tricky, sort of.  I understand their good intentions.  Yes, smoking is terrible for you.  It causes disease and rots your health away to nothing.  But at the same time, you cannot prevent people from doing it in their own homes.  It’s just not right.  Unless cigerettes become outlawed in general like crack cocaine, I could not back a law like this even though smoking is as terrible as it is.  This is fascism.  A government, local or otherwise, cannot tell a person what he or she can or cannot do in their own homes. Period. -Mort

The land of fruits and nuts. And communists. I don’t like smoking, but I dislike any government body that implies they have the ‘right’ to dictate what people do in their own homes more.

      CALIFORNIA ALCOHOL COSTS to SOCIETY

Alcohol abuse is known to cause illness, disability, and premature death. It is also a contributing
factor in many instances to criminal activity, motor vehicle crashes, and other injuries. Substantial costs resulting from alcohol abuse are incurred in the United States and in California, including the cost of providing medical care for people with alcohol-related illness, treatment and prevention costs, costs to the law enforcement system, costs resulting from alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes and other injuries, and the indirect costs associated with disability, diminished capacity, and premature death from alcohol-related causes. The purpose of this briefing paper is to review the research that has been done in this area, and to present preliminary estimates of the costs of alcohol abuse in California and its impact on the state. These estimates are based on research that has been conducted by experts at the national level over the years coupled with some specific analyses conducted for California. We also suggest how one could conduct a thorough study to develop more detailed and refined estimates for the state.
