Daddy Yankee Found Liable for $6 Million for Cancelled Argentina Tour
Reggaeton star Daddy Yankee was ordered to pay $6 million to an Argentine promoter in connection with the Puerto Rican singer’s aborted 2010 tour of the South American nation, attorney Edwin Prado said Monday.
The attorney said that on Nov. 21, a U.S. federal court in Miami ruled that Yankee and his company, El Cartel Records, libeled promoter Diego Hernan De Iraola by blaming him for the cancellation of the 10-city tour.
“This is not a final verdict. We’re working on a series of motions that we must exhaust before we can appeal this sentence, because the actions they’re accusing Yankee of were neither authorized nor instigated by the artist or his company,” Prado told Efe.
He said the libel was made in a communique issued by Icaro Services, an agency that promoted the artist’s concerts, which said that the cancellation of the 2010 tour in Argentina was due “to the lack of payment in full to Icaro Services by those contracting the company, Diego De Iraola and Five Live Entertainment.”
The Puerto Rican artist, whose real name is Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez, had planned to perform between November and December 2010 in Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Rosario, Tucuman, Cordoba, Salta, San Juan, Neuquen, Bahia Blanca and Comodoro Rivadavia.
De Iraola said he and his company lost $800,000 from the cancellation of the tour.
